Re: No sound ?
Also install paman, padevchooser, pavucontrol, and alsamixergui.
Open pavucontrol and go to the "Configuration" tab. Set it to something simple like "analog stereo duplex". Then go to "Output device" tab and make sure the channel is not muted, and slide the volume up to 75%.
Now go to Systemsettings > Multimedia > Phonon > Music. You should see Pulseaudio listed in the right panel. Move it to the top of the list if it isn't there already. Now push the "Test" button in the lower right -- did you hear the tones?

Re: No sound ?
Hello
I am having the same issue here: no sound whatsoever!!
I tried following your steps, and I noticed that the sound bar in pavucontrol changes in response to hitting 'test' in Multimedia settings.
Still. I hear nothing. Nothing is muted.
The only devices that appear in pavucontrol are 'Juniper HDMI [Radeon HD 5700 series]' (my graphics card) and 'Internal Audio'. No reference to my ATI VIA motherboard soundcard.
Phonon is the only on the list, and using Xine as preferred backend (I've tried both).
My sound was working fine with pre-kubuntu 11, but I can't recall wether I was using Pulseaudio or ALSA.
Please I need some hint as to how to troubleshoot this.
Thanks in advance for all the help. Always been a happy kubuntu user, I hope this can be fixed soon.
Cheers

1. Hardware things -- in BIOS, is there an entry for the onboard sound? Make sure it is enabled. Do your speakers use an external power supply -- is it plugged in? Then double-check that the speakers are connected to the rear audio speaker jack (assuming a desktop setup).
2. Low-level recognition in the system:
"lspci -vv" does the kernel see your audio chip?
"cat /proc/asound/cards" -- are all the connected sound devices listed?
"aplay -l" -- another way to visualize all available audio channels
3. Audio configuration packages:
alsa-base alsamixergui -- the classic ALSA interface
paman padevchooser pavucontrol pavumeter -- pulseaudio utilities
Although you will find posts from folks whose first activity on a new *buntu installation is to purge pulseaudio, I have found it perfectly usable on both Kubuntu and Debian/KDE for several years, on multiple hardware platforms, so I use it. But, when mixing headphones, webcams, external microphones, and onboard audio devices, it can get tricky. On one of my platforms, to control an external microphone it is necessary to run alsamixergui and click the "front mic" and "front mic boost" for every KDE session -- the setting does not persist between KDE sessions. So, you can open alsamixergui, and pavucontrol, at the same time, and also pavumeter, and by observing the response to a microphone test you can see what makes it work and what does not. If you play with pavucontrol (and alsamixergui if necessary), you should discover that you can really control the audio channels with pretty good precision.
Also, unless you are certain you need it, you normally should turn the digital channel OFF in pavucontrol configuration.
I hope this helps.

Re: No sound ?
With HDA Intel chips, you might need to use an "option" in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.

Oh my!!!
It works now!! I can't believe it!!!
Thank you so much for your fast and comprehensive response.
Thanks for the advice. I will now try to learn more about the commands you told me, with my favourite music on the background...
EDIT: I actually don't really know which of the things I tried did the trick
