I recently ran the maverick to natty upgrade, which didn't go so smoothly. The system hung late in the "install updates " process.
I rebooted, and at the grub loader went to the oldest linux version in recovery mode, then repaired broken packages, and then rebooted, and I now get into natty OK.
However, when i use Kpackage kit to check for updates, it finds
ia32-libs
libvlccore4
as updates, and when I go to apply them, it downloads OK, then fails on the install, returning error code:
subprocess dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2
I tried installing some other software packages (shotwell, cheese, for example), and the same thing happens.
I gather there is a problem with the dpkg-deb process, but have searched widely and can't seem to find a recent solution. Any tips much appreciated.
