I just installed kubuntu 10.10 alongside my fresh install of windows xp, which is what I do when I'm tired of my old operating system. This is nothing new, but what is new is that when I installed Kubuntu, it didn't recognize my wireless card. This is the first time this has ever happened to me, out of the dozen times I've installed Kubuntu onto this computer. I had to boot into my windows installation to connect to the internet, since connection to my wired internet is in my kitchen, and having my computer and cables all over the place bothers my family to no ends. While I wired it up, I downloaded all the updates through apt-get to see if that would help the installation recognize my card. It is a Broadcom 802.11g I believe, and I've never had a problem using it until now. I didn't think to copy any of the listing from iwlist, ifconfig or iwconfig until just now, but I do recall it saying for wlan0[my card] that it was 'managed' rather then up/broadcasting. Not sure about this, as well, when I click on KnetworkManager, it says the card is unavailable. Not sure what to do about this, and any help would be appreciated. If there are any specific commands that are needed to be seen, I will boot back into Kubuntu, punch the commands, copy and bring it back over to Windows. Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: wireless card marked as 'unavailable'
Check K > System > Additional Drivers to see if your card is recognized and a driver recommended. Broadcom wireless cards are not well supported 'natively' in Kubuntu, usually requiring a 'wrapper' in order to work.Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Re: wireless card marked as 'unavailable'
I'm not sure what a 'wrapper' is since like stated, I've never had a problem before now. I've occassionally had the issue of a network not showing up, but never the card being dead..
I shall do that, once I fix my windows machine..its true, can't have windows running for more then a minute before a virus gets on it. I hate it, I really do.Computer Lie #1: You'll never use all that disk space.
FATAL SYSTEM ERROR: Press F13 to continue...
The box said, "Requires Windows 7 Home Edition or better" ..so I installed Linux
My software never has bugs. Re: wireless card marked as 'unavailable'
The STA card did the trick. Thanks for helping me about this, I looked there once, but that was before I did the updates. I'm thinking that I should've looked after I updated the system, but it works.
