I think it's unlikely you would need drivers for your ethernet connection, although you do need them for your wireless simply because it involves firmware that has not been open-sourced.
The lock message you go is the correct response from kpackagekit when you attempt to update without an internet connection.
I assume you plugged the wired connection in and then booted the machine? If not please reboot with the cable plugged in. If you have already tried this the likely scenario is that something has happened to shut down or knock out network management. If a suspend has gone wrong or the system has crashed that can happen. If that is the problem the the command I just gave you should reset and restart it.
If that doesn't work we need to get back to basics maybe. Assuming you used a live CD or usb stick try booting the live version, this time with the ethernet cable in. Do you get a connection then?
