I think it's unlikely you would need drivers for your ethernet connection, although you do need them for your wireless simply because it involves firmware that has not been open-sourced.

The lock message you go is the correct response from kpackagekit when you attempt to update without an internet connection.

I assume you plugged the wired connection in and then booted the machine? If not please reboot with the cable plugged in. If you have already tried this the likely scenario is that something has happened to shut down or knock out network management. If a suspend has gone wrong or the system has crashed that can happen. If that is the problem the the command I just gave you should reset and restart it.

If that doesn't work we need to get back to basics maybe. Assuming you used a live CD or usb stick try booting the live version, this time with the ethernet cable in. Do you get a connection then?

ok have tried the command you gave me first one then brings a return of SUDO then asks for a password which i type in and hit enter then comes back saying sorry try again? my passowrd is very very easy and its not accepting it? so cant get any further??
i have rebooted sevral times now with ethernet cable in place and still same nothing starts or is any diffrent.

wow i never thought was gonna be as hard and complicated as this lol.

after it not accepting my password then none of the commands seem to work and it tells me the script you are attempting to envoke has been converted to an upstart job. but shop is not supported for upstart jobs.

so i have to reboot to get back to where i was with first command in the terminal

Okay with that command on my machine I was able to knock out networking and restart it.

However, I was wrong in that I have found you need to treat it as 3 separate commands, each one starting with sudo.

See if that is the magic bullet. As indicated earlier by ole jule this is probably something fairly straightforward - it just needs finding! It may be that during the installation the manner in which you set up the network may have contributed to the situation, or maybe not. If splitting the command doesn't work, try booting with the live cd with the cable in. Any joy there?

aarrgghh this is so frustrating same thing no matter what first command fine!!
then asks for password and tells me wrong answer
then i get all the other stuff and wont let me do any other commands.

have to reboot system and start again?

when asked for the password i type it 1 2 3 4 5 with no spaces though the cursor does not move and nothing happens so i then hit enter to be told sorry try again?

i picked 12345 on purpose so i would not forget it.

Yes when you type in your password you see no movement. I suspect security is the reason for that. However, if you and the system cannot agree on your password then you won't get very much done I'm afraid - for example you need that password to install software.

im sorry but im actually a few paces behind you all the time, if i stick the cd in i get the options boot from hard disk or basically installagain etc? im not clear on what i am trying to do here although the network cable is plugged in??

What CD do you have, is it the Live CD (aka desktop) , where you can get a "try" option and can then take it for a test drive or the "alternate "cd which only has install options?

From what you say, it seems you have the latter whereas generally new users are recommended to use the former as you can test it on your system before you install.

looks like i have the latter i downloaded it from kubuntu website, so i will go and try the last topic of change password then, and start again

right i have followed the link to change te password and it worked fine, so rebooted back in terminal
sudo service netwrok-manager shop

promps for password i enter it again and hit enter
and comes back with this same stuff still?

no i must have the same cd as tried it again start kubuntu from cd and it's loaded but everything seems the same with rex network area etc and network cable was plugged in from before i started?
anything i should be doing in here?

To be honest with you I'm not sure why that would happen unless it is caused by networking not being enabled at all. On reading your output it seems to be telling you you are heading in the wrong direction.

The network-manager stop command should stop the network manager running (if it is)

Maybe if nothing is configured at the start, the network management isn't invoked. If it was never started maybe you can't stop it.

It may be that the quickest solution will be to reinstall with the ethernet cable connected and you select that as your preferred connection method. As you have never had a net connection I assume you still effectively have a virgin installation. Before you do, however, what happens if you try the following command

sudo ifup eth0

right managed to get info using the teminal
network-manager stop/waiting

and then network-manager start/running, process 1592

but still seems the same?
