due to some graphics card issues im booting from a disk to backup some files before reformatting. Ive been using truecrypt to encrypt some things. How would I run truecrypt, or save some of those encrypted files.

I'll start with a disclaimer: I have never used Truecrypt, so I am not speaking from experience.
However, I used the Synaptic package manager (other package managers should give similar results) to search package names and descriptions for Truecrypt and I came up with 2 hits: "easycrypt" and "gdecrypt". Take a look at the descriptions. I suspect that one or both will do what you want to do.
