Running Kubunt 10.04 and Last night I installed some updates, don't know them all off hand. Now when I boot it goes straight to command line. I tried to run

    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

    but all i get is

-bash: cd: /etc/init.d/gdm: no such file or directory

kdm yes sorry... and yes all the updates said they ran fine and said the changes would take effect after i restarted.

After running "start kdm" I get this little error message.

      start: rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type = "method_call", sender= ":1 (uid=1000 pid=1401 comm="start) interface= "com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6. Job "member = tart" error name = "(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination = "com.ubuntu.Upstart' id=0 pid=1 comm="/s bin/init"))

instaed of start kdm try startx and get the errors.

did you have a non standard video driver installed?

see if the file system is full with
        Code:
        df -h

a good bit of text flew by faster than i could read it but this was at the tail end of it all

Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module lease see the (EE) Jan 26... NVIDIA(0): system kernel log for additional error sages and consult NVIDIA readme...
          ...
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a useable configuration
          Fatal server error:
          no screens found
Xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to xserver

I ran df -h and got 53% back...

              why not edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?

and change nvidia to nv? or at least to vesa?

And I suspect updates might fix everything.

Well ....I've taken to forgetting their even IS a xorg.conf anymore .......my system hasn't used one in so long....... but also figured just booting safe graphics would be easy enough then he could use the hardware drivers utility to get the driver back ......if thats even what's going on

Ok went into my x11 directory and replaced xorg.conf with xorg.conf.backup... No change... I've never edited the grub before so I went to /boot/grub but theres a long list of files, most I can't scroll up to see. So which file should be edited?

wile you box is booting keep hitting shift key and the grub menu should show.
when it dose I think it's the E key to edit the boot line .........remove the quiet splash and add vga=vesa .......then I think (it's on the screen) it's ctrl>x to boot the modified line.

You may need to reinstall nvidia driver. I'm not familiar with nvidia as I never use it, but you may find the following post usefull:

Got the grub to work, there are 12 choices on the menu
                            Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-27-generic

There are nine more of these only replace the 27 with 26, 25, 24, and 21, each has a (recovery mode) version as well.

I chose Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-27-generic removed "quiet splash" and added vga=vesa after several lines of script I was prompted to the same text login screen I keep getting.

After rebooting again and going back to grub that version still has the quiet splash and no vga=vesa.
