HELP NEEDED URGENTLY! Touchpad, wireless and other stuff not working!

    Hi, all.
I made a similar post recently, but I feel the need to start a new one because I don't think I provided the right information last time.
I am very new to Linux. I received a netbook from a very small Australian company with a Linux OS pre-installed. That OS was a ubuntu spin-off called gOS (short for Good-OS and based on Ubuntu 8.04) Since I had flirted with programming, am often modding things, and I have a hatred of Microsoft (don't we all?) I decided to keep to OS and not install windows. After a bit of learning, everything was working fine. My only problems though, were that I had found out that Ubuntu 8.04 is very outdated, the resolution only went up to 1024 by 600, and GNOME seemed ugly to me.
I decided to install Kubuntu 10.10 as-soon as it was released.
I installed it via USB, I tried it, got the internet working, but my touchpad wasn't working. I figured that once I had installed the OS I would find a way to get the touchpad working.
I totally installed Kubuntu 10.10, and wiped off gOS.
Then, I went to the forums to fix the touchpad, but I believe I provided the wrong information and I was very busy at the time.
Now my wireless has gone crazy. Only occasionally does it connect to my wireless connection and when it does the connectivity is really bad, even when I'm standing next to the modem! The speed is only 11MBit/s compared to my normal 54!
The touchpad isn't working, neither are the left and right mouse buttons below it.
I really need this machine up and running before school in a couple days, so your help is really thanked!

I'll try and give as much info as possible:

I've tried all the buttons on my keyboard and tonnes of combinations but I can't get the touchpad working, and under input devices it says no touchpad was found.

This is my netbook, and some specs:

    Any help?
    Thanks!

    Googled: ubuntu Agora NetBook

    Touchpad here: http://agoranetbook.kayno.net/2009/1...u-9-10-grub-2/

Wireless: It talks about asking kogan for a new wireless card here: http://agoranetbook.kayno.net/2009/0...ork-mini-card/

It says: "I do recommend that anyone who has an early kogan agora or agora pro netbook with the VIA wifi card to email kogan with your original order number, and request a replacement wifi card. I was offered the option to have the card mailed to me, or to send in my netbook to have the new card installed.

With the new wifi card, you do not have to worry about drivers in ubuntu, and also the card apparently performs better than the VIA card, so it is worth the email!"

The info you give does not indicate a wireless card. Have you tried the command: lspci
(That's l for lemur, not I for India)

Re: HELP NEEDED URGENTLY! Touchpad, wireless and other stuff not working!

Please somebody else tell me how I am wrong...but I see no wi-fi card listed in lspci.

I find this is odd. I used to have a Broadcom (make irrelevant here) which didn't work out of the box - but lspci showed that it was there and so I could set about installing it.

The alternative call to lspci (=list pci devices) is lsusb (=list usb devices) but I don't know that it is relevant here.

A short term fix might be to get Linux Compatible USB Wireless Dongle e.g. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ubuntu-Linux-U...#ht_1900wt_907

(...I know this is Ebay UK, but that's where I am)

Re: HELP NEEDED URGENTLY! Touchpad, wireless and other stuff not working!

So you have the more recent USB Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter

According to the blog I quoted "Upon rebooting I was delighted to see the new wifi card worked out of the box – no driver installation required (unlike the VIA card). It also connected to my wireless network at home, just like the old card had."

            (But...there is a Bug Report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/673682)

Perhaps someone else knows more about getting the card working.

Is your home router open or secured? WPA, WEP, WEP2?

Some people rave about using "wicd" instead of "network-manager"

Try installing "wifi-radar" to see if you pick up anything.

              Thanks!
              My encryption is only WEP.
I'm actually connected right now but sometimes it just randomly cuts off and asks me for the WEP key, or refuses to connect. It is also running slower than normal.
I thinks I might install wicd.

I don't have wireless on this Kubuntu system, so some things I read here don't exactly stick. But I'm pretty sure I read that you can't run both wicd and network-manager without conflict. I think you have to chose one or the other. Network-manager has a reputation on this forum of not working for some people, so it's probably a good idea to dump it if you are in doubt.

wicd won't work if knetworkmanager is also installed. Remove knetworkmanager completely and try again

Things must have changed since I last tried.

When you tried to install wicd it wanted to remove network-manager and so in.

So they couldn't both be installed at the same time

OK. So I've removed KnetworkManager and I'm using wicd, but the signal strength is only decent when I'm standing next to the modem. The network is usually lightning fast on other computers, and it was fast when I was running gOS.

Is it about the way I'm connecting to the network?
If so, could someone explain to me what DHCP, DNS and all that other stuff is?
I really have no clue. I live in Australia, and I hear that our IP addresses change every x hours.
                              Is this true?
It keeps asking me for the passphrase, even though I definitely have the right one.
On the OS I used before this I just put in the passphrase and it would connect, there wasn't all this other stuff.
                              Thanks
