    Trying out v10.10 -help !

Looks good ! may move from Hardy Heron (which I love)

    but don't understand 2 matters:-

    1) Is Chrome stable on 10.10 ?

Is Rekong better to Firefox or Chrome or just different ?

    2) Desktops:- there appears to be two of them ! The one it wakes with has no name and another sites in the bottom tool bar thing on the mid right hand side.

What are the advantages of this... I'm a bit lost !

Any big pluses (or minuses) that 10.10 has and does it have a name ?

Many thanks in advance for an thoughts on this.

10.10 is named Maverick Meerkat. I think you'd be better off switching from LTS to LTS (i.e. 8.04 Hardy Heron to 10.04 Lucid Lynx. And whichever version you choose, please consider doing a clean install and not upgrading from your current version. There are just too many issues with upgrading.

      Personal things that I've noted:

Rekonq is neither better or worse then Firefox[I have not used Chrome, so I can give no input for that]. It has a tendency to crash with me if I try to do heavy surfing[such as YouTube videos and the like] so I use it for a speedy web page browser, and use FireFox as a heavy weight browser[It handles multple large streaming tasks like a pro].

I usually run the Netbook version of Plasma, but you say theres two desktops, that means one of them is the "Desktop Folder" and the other is generally where you can place useful Plasmoids["Widgets" for Plasma] and the like. How it works is basically like a shortcut menu rather then using the KickOff menu bar to go where you need to go. I don't usually use the Desktop though[since I'm running a netbook, the netbook option makes a little more sense, but I've experimented with both]. If your refering to the bottom left corner, to the right of the KickOff and the "Show Desktop" feature, then thats the multiple workspaces, you can change how many you have your computer running by going to

      Kickoff-->system settings-->window behavior-->virtual desktops

this way you can edit however many you wish to have.

I haven't used any of the other Kubuntu versions, so I can't give an input on pro-vs-con on the older versions, but I can say that like rfakhrai says, perform a clean install because upgrading from older-->newer does many strange things.

The biggest things that I like about it is the flexibility of the interface, you can tweak things a tremendous amount, which is BEYOND useful. I remember how it looked when I first got it, and what I've done with it now, you can make it very similar to who you are, whats comfortable, etc.

Hope my input helps out some[though, also as rfakhrai says, I wouldn't know, but if its easier to switch to similars[8.04-->10.04] then you should disregard what I say]

I can give input that its a whole ton better then Windows though xDD

EDIT: I meant to say QuickAccess Browser on the bottom left, not Show the Desktop. My bad

I've been using Chrome for ages, and even this post is in Chrome.
It is stable in 10.10, I use it in both Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

I should clarify my statement above. 10.04 is the Long Term Support version. 10.10 is the latest-and-greatest. Therefore, if you're simply looking for stability and support (as exemplified by your decision to stick with 8.04 all these years), I'd highly recommend 10.04. It's got the same great flexible features as LinkMaster said 10.10 has.

Regarding browsers, I'm using Chrome v. 9.0.597.45 beta and it does not act like a beta at all. In fact, to my knowledge, 10.10 doesn't have the non-beta version anyway. Simply put, it's stable and fast.

So join us on this side of KDE4, Tim036!

Re: Trying out v10.10 -help !

Wow ! Many thanks for all those inputs !

I did a clean install ! On top of an install of 10.04 ! *LOL* So I will stay with 10.10 as I installed a copy of that on my son's laptop !

Some of the comments missed me, such as xDD.... what is that ?

I fully updated 10.10 it but there I usually freeze up dates , incase one nukes the OS ! (It happened on Hardy Heron and lead to a re-install ! (Mega groan at the time).

I'll stay with 10.10 until it proves untrust worthy !

LTS how do you know when a release has this status ? (First I've heard of it. )

Does it really cope with all the 'Flash' stuff that Hardy Heron could not ! ? If so Brill !

            Many many thanks everyone !

You have 2 options to download there - 10.10 and 10.04, later is LTS. It is mentioned there.

                Hi Tim

On the 2 desktop point, it could be that you actually have 2 panels! Unless you upgraded to kde 4.5 when running 10.04, you will have now upgraded from 4.4x to 4.5.1.

There are some structural differences between the 2 and I and some others found that when we booted up a new panel sat on top of the old one! If you think that's happened, I suggest you unlock the widgets and right click on the panel and remove it to reveal the one underneath. If you then find you have deleted the only panel, you can always install another by right-clicking on the desktop and using the add widget dialog.

The "xDD" is texting/IMing lingo, essentially meaning a tremendous amount of amusement. Its like a facial feature[ex. being =) and =D, the first being happy, the other extremely happy]

                  Sorry for the confusion :P

Re: Trying out v10.10 -help !

On the question of updates, there is one that I can wholeheartedly recommend, which is upgrading kde to version 4.5.5. It reflects several more months of development, has an improved feature set and is solid as a rock.

                    http://www.kubuntu.org/kde-sc-4.5.5

Basically simply open your package manager, add the ppa referred to as a source, then update then upgrade.

Before you reboot, again because of an issue I and others have had, before you reboot I would type the following in a terminal:

                    Code:
                    sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop
This package can sometimes get missed, which can cause problems so it's best to prevent it.

*LOL* Text ? you need a Mobile phone to practice that first ? *LOL*

I nuked 10.04 so zero of it is left. 100% clean install.

On a more trivial point, it keeps turning itself off screen wise. How do I keep the screen and it running 24/7 ? I have the settings a poke but its still doing it.

I like very simple machines that have a on/off switch that means just that. I just prefer it not to make those decisions. A hang over from Unix days when the phosphor on the screen would burn out easily.

                      Many thanks for the responses.

Take a look in system settings/power management. You can turn off the screen power savings there.

Well my attempt to keep the screen and PC running 24/7 failed ! There must be a way of doing it !

Now I'm going to Install Maverick Meerkat (10.10 ) on a 64 bit PC using a 1 TB drive.

I thought to partition it with a Data Drive of 400GB and the rest for whatever the OS wants to do. This is my best uninformed poke at a good ? idea.

Is there a better strategy ?

                              Any thoughts, very welcome !
