Using Konsole, I can get the wireless card to pick up my access point. The minute I try to give it a key, it drops it.

Does that help you figure out what is wrong?

Do I really need to rebuild ndiswrapper module?

im not sure if you need to rebuild the module or not cause i have never used ndiswrapper on any of my systems.. you might just have an issue with not having wpasupplicant package. thats is required for wpa to work at all (but i think wicd and NM depend on it) if its install reinstall it , if its not install it.
