[SOLVED] Lucid Lynx: Touchpad not found.

    Hello,
I am new to kubuntu, just switched from Fedora.
    I am using Kubuntu 10.04. KDE 4.4.2
My laptop Sony Vaio-vpcee23fx. AMD vision, 64 bit.

Touchpad is not working ever since I have installed it.
Tried an external mouse and its perfectly working.
Touchpad or its buttons none of it works. Opened up the synaptics settings but all the options for touchpad is grayed out and no way to change it or edit anything.

The touchpad works fine while on Win 7.

Any suggestion/concerns will be appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you, I tried that earlier but it didnt work.
I figured out maybe not all ubuntu commands work on kubuntu.

      I get this-

      sudo edit /etc/default/grub
      Warning: unknown mime-type for "/etc/default/grub" -- using "application/octet-stream"
Error: no "edit" mailcap rules found for type "application/octet-stream"
      And this-

      sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
      sudo: gedit: command not found

Re: Lucid Lynx: Touchpad not found.

It must be a difference between Grub and Grub2 which is now used. There are various guides to Grub2 e.g. http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3106368.0

...Unfortunately I'm going out and don't have time to investigate...

gedit is a gnome program and therefore not installed in a kde system.

The kde common text editors are kwrite and kate.

Moreover, do NOT try running them with a "sudo" prefix -- that's a good way to inflict "login loop" on yourself. Use Alt-F2 "kdesudo kate" with no quote marks, to run kate with root privileges for editing system files.

Thanks, we'll call that "today's contribution".

BTW, I did incorporate your elegant blkid table command in my FAQs (with credit) -- thanks for that too.

just wondering does you track pad have an on /off switch most laptops i have come across have one (on this machine its fn+F7) when its "off" it stops working and is not seen by the os.

Re: Lucid Lynx: Touchpad not found.

                    Thank you DIBL. It worked!

                    Steps:
                    1. alt+f2- kdesudo kate
                    2. opened file root/etc/default/grub
                    3. added GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="i8042.reset i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop"
                    4. finally, opened a terminal and- sudo update-grub
                    5. Reboot

NOw it works! Although it scared me for a little as as soon as I changed the speed of it in the settings, it stopped working again. But I changed it back to slow and it started working again, so I assume this touchpad wont work in a 'high' setting in Kubuntu. Well, it works and thats the point!

@sithlord48: No I do not have a button/switch like that. But thank you for your concern.

And thanks everyone for suggestion and concerns.
You all have a very Happy New Year :-)
