Just installed Kubuntu 10.10 & need to connect modem

I have a PC with WindowsXP and just installed Kubuntu 10.10 in dual-boot configuration. Tried to use KPPP to find and configure Lucent Technologies dial-up modem. I really don't know what to do? The modem is an internal card to my PC. I feel that getting the modem going is my first required task in learning Kubuntu. Would appreciate some detailed help.

Also, is there a Kubuntu manual available for download

Setting up an internal modem, especially a "winmodem", is not the easiest first Linux task you could have assigned yourself. :P

    However, this should help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Di...emHowto/Modems

Re: Just installed Kubuntu 10.10 & need to connect modem

        Hi...

If, by chance, the suggestions offered above don't help, another option would be to buy an external hardware modem like this one. Just make sure you have a serial port on your system before you buy one. You may also need to purchase the serial cable separately. I don't think most USB external modem count as hardware modems since they are technically external winmodems.

        Hope this helps...

Lucent modems are the pits for Linux.... Sorry for the bad news. :-(

To your other questions, here is a PDF of the Ubuntu manual:

Re: Just installed Kubuntu 10.10 & need to connect modem

I'm another newbie. I bought and returned a USRobotics external USB modem touted as Linux compatible. It's installation CD contained nothing for Linux. The manual suggested a weird driver that I could not find on the Internet. No help on the USRobotics site.

I was working with Ubuntu 10.10, not Kubuntu, even tried Ubuntu 8.04.2. Found the manual to my old internal modem, a USRobotics 5610B. It was Linux compatible! After days of fussing, borrowing a book on Ubuntu and downloading various "packages" (with Public library computer or using Windows XP in dual boot at home), finally got the modem detected and contacting ISP. Somehow ISP server never accepted the username and password. PPP log showed reason for failure. I also tried wvdial with same result.

Switched to Kubuntu 10.10. Kppp pkg included in installation. After adding resolv.conf file to the "etc" directory (folder), it worked! See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=480717. Not out of the woods yet. Now the default browser and email apps don't work with the connection. They act as if the modem is not even there.

Meanwhile, AV software under Windows XP is not really updating on my dial up properly. I'm afraid that dial up (<56 KB) is too slow, obsolete. Either jump into broadband or forget it. I am thinking of keeping my home pc off the Internet. Rely on weekly visits to the Public library. Let the library staff worry about malware and software updates.

                Hi...

I've used the same modem on Ubuntu 5.10 without any problems. You don't need any specific drivers or installation CD's, Linux (Ubuntu/Kubuntu) will use it "out of the box."

I would agree that dial-up is quickly becoming too slow and obsolete to handle things efficiently anymore but at the same time the monthly costs for broadband need to come down quite a bit. If I remember correctly, Avast can still deal with dial-up connections quite well when updating. There may be others, too.

                  Thanks for all the help.

Regarding the modem: I've decided to go to high speed access.

Thanks also for the manual which I just downloaded. Looks like it will be a great help.

Hi XdodoBC. I think you'd be happier with broadband. Dialup works well for many things, but so many websites are either poorly written or just plain inconsiderate of low bandwidth users - of which there are many. Anyway, I just felt like addressing the following statement:

The installation CD is not of much use to anybody except the vendor. I don't know about this particular model, but for a real modem there is nothing you need to know - and definitely no drivers. The CD however is an opportunity for the MS camp to discourage anyone from using anything but MS software.
