Computer specs in message- Keyboard problems while trying to install Kubuntu.

    computer info:
    Desktop- Gateway brand DX series
    CPU- intel 64 bit
GPU- on board for now, have a PNY XLR8 1 GIG. Nvidia Ge Force GTS 250
Hard drive- one 500gig, had windows problems wanting to clean install using kubuntu.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The problems that I have been having are as follows: I was trying the Live CD's but kept getting the error "(iniframsf) unable to find medium containing live file system"

Tried USB flashdrive boot with the same effect- both 64 and 32 bit.
Downloaded the alternate CD from kubuntu- version 10.10 wrote that to a CD-R getting to the language selection after hitting the install option however now my problem is that at the language selection screen my keyboard doesn't seem to be responding or the install is freezing- I am using a PS2 keyboard and also have a USB keyboard that seems to do the same thing, everything is showing in BIOS and even works up until I hit install on the Kubuntu menu screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you very much for reading this post.

Re: In need of some help.

I'm pretty new at this, but perhaps I can be of a little assistance.

When you burned the .iso file, did you make sure to burn it at the slowest possible speed? Because sometimes, when burned at faster speeds, the files can corrupt, causing issues in all sorts of random places.

When you were at the keyboard, you let it use the automatic finder, correct? I have found that allowing it to find your keyboard the automatic way is easiest. When you say PS2 your refering to the Playstation, correct? I'm not a Sony person very much, so I don't know the best thing to do with that..my advice would be to buy a really cheap keyboard that plugs in via USB or something, the Kubuntu should automatically pick that up, and when its installed it will probably be able to automatically install the PS2 keyboard.

Concerning the install section, if your performing a clean install, you made sure that you created a SWAP partition? Like I said, I'm not the best, but I've noticed that having a SWAP partition-at least the size of your RAM I believe, I made mine 4GB and its surving wonderfully.

I don't know how much this will help, but I'm hoping it does

Re: In need of some help.

Thank you for replying, yes I did burn at the slowest speed. As far as the keyboard goes ps2 is the old type of round plug, I am not changing any of the settings when the disc is in so I am left to assume that it is set to auto detect hardware. The problem that I am having as far as my hard drive is concerned is that windows will not load at all so I can't create a partition, and I can't wipe the hard drive safely. Therefor I am trying to use Kubuntu to wipe the hard drive so I am not doing a dual boot just Kubuntu.

Thank you again for any help.

In addition to what Linkmaster suggested, did you check the md5sum on the downloaded ISO and then check the LiveCD using BlindSide's method, which doesn't require the LiveCD be booted?

windows will not load at all
          Tried USB flashdrive boot
So, can we assume that you have access to more than one machine?
I was trying the Live CD's
Did the LiveCDs work in another machine?

Did you check the MD5? Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto and scroll down to "Verifying disk and data integrity"

If the ISO is borked and you make both the CDs and USB stick from that, neither will work.

Re: In need of some help.

I am not using a live CD, the ISO is good. When using the live CD I was not able to even get the install option. I am using the alternate cd download which I am having more luck with. However my problem is the keyboard seems to stop working when at the language selection screen after hitting the install option.

Thank you so much for your reply.

and thank you to anyone that is viewing this thread.

Well this means that the boot possibly worked, since your windows is no longer working. And from arochester, do you have access to more then one machine? Because it might be that you will need to get some form of software to wipe your machine, treat it like a brandnew harddrive. And you did check the MD5 hash string, correct? Because as arochester says..

Though I don't know about the keyboard issue. I understand what you mean now, I have a desktop that uses those type of keyboard plugins.

Re: In need of some help.

I don't think that this is a ISO problem, I am not understanding why everything works up to the point of install and then I don't get any response from the keyboard. I was however looking at the BIOS of my computer and they are rather old, I am not sure if that is playing into any problems that I am having and I am fearful that it might ruin my computer if I try to update those at this time. I am no longer getting any errors when I run the disc that I made. I just can't get passed the language selection screen for some strange reason.

Thank you for your replies and for viewing this post.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if your BIOS is very old, that could indeed be part of the problem. I've never had much of a BIOS issue, since my computer is relatively new, but what I DO know is that when you update your BIOS you need to make sure that nothing interupts it, for its possible that if its interupted you'll need to get a new motherboard. Of course, last I checked, most computers will allow BIOS updates to be done without messing the computer up.

I really have no clue as to why your CD won't work, you might need to redownload the .iso and reburn it. This seems a little out of my league concerning what is/isn't wrong, because I didn't have a problem with my CD..
