Thank you for this i tried all the other suggestions which did not work for me but triad this and my problem went away .... was in debian package search and wanted to update the list, it opens a terminal window and asks for root password, did your suggestion and it worked thanx again. There are a couple of other apps that did the same going to try them out now.

Problems with root password

FYI: by design and default Kubuntu does not allow logging in as root, which is different than using sudo - which gives temporary admin privileges.

I suggest you not log in as root, unless you're very sure of what you're doing.
