kde sudo login and kde wallet

I am running Meerkat with KDE.

When logged in as non-su and wanting to mount another drive or partition to gain file access (windoze), I am asked for a KDE-sudo login, but none of my own or root passwords work and I am then informed that its not mounted - naturally.
My understanding must be wrong as I thought that using your own user pw allowed mounting, or using the admin's pw did. Any thoughts please?

Also, being the only person using this PC, how do I get rid of the KDE wallet?

Many thanks in advance for any and all responses.

As the installer of the system, you, the user, are allowed to execute actions 'as root' when required. If running a GUI app that requires root access to execute/run, you are prompted to enter your user password.

As to KWallet, just go to K Menu > System Settings > Account Details > KDE Wallet > Wallet Preferences and uncheck Enable the KDE wallet subsystem and then click on Apply. You won't be bothered by KWallet again.

Thanks Snowhog, I do understand that. However, what you're suggesting does not work. Whatever password I enter only ends up as not being recognised. For example, to gain access to the windows partition, I have to logout of being me as user and then login as me as root, but then that's very cumbersome. Any further thoughts please?

Thanks for the kwallet tip. Much appreciated.

wile loged in as YOU do
        Code:
        groups
in a terminal and see if you are in the adm and admin groups .

explane how you were mounting the drive!!

in dolphin you should see the drive in the places panel (F9 togels on or off for the panel) if you click the drive and enter your password it dose not work ?

          Thanks Vinny,
groups shows me being logged in as adm.
Yes, I click on the drive on the panel in Dolphin and that's when the saga occurs of trying multiple passwords without success.
It says an "error occurred, cannot get bus-daemon".

you are logged in as you.......adm is one of the groups associated with your acct.

not good ......as a workaround see if you can open a root dolphin (alt>F2 kdesudo dolphin) probably not if you cant mount the drive aether.

            then try in a terminal
            Code:
            kdesudo dolphin
last resort .....from a root terminal
            Code:
            sudo su
            enter password
            then
            Code:
            dolphin
use the root dolphin to mount the drive.....dangerous playing with a root dolphin though so be carfull.

check and see if your in all these groups first though
            vinny@desktop:~$ groups
vinny adm dialout cdrom plugdev lpadmin admin sambashare

Re: kde sudo login and kde wallet

note that adm group is not exactly the same as the 'admin' group. iirc adding a user to the 'admin' group allows sudo access form that user account. In order to use sudo, the account that is logged-in needs to be a sudo user, though you can use the

sudo -i -u <username> to log in to a terminal as a sudo user.
sudo -i will also iirc give you a root login in that terminal.

Also as you have bypassed Kubuntu's sudo system (and possibly mangled it a little), have you tried opening a terminal and used the 'su' command to get access to the root terminal account? I am not sure if the user 'root' in *buntu's are in the sudoers list or the admin group automatically (it doesn't need to be, I think).

                Code:
                su
                enter password for root user
                or maybe
                Code:
                sudo -i
enter password for sudo user if that user is the account logged in to.
                Code:
                adduser <username> admin

Re: kde sudo login and kde wallet

This 'situation' has been seen before. What I would like to know, is how, during an installation of Kubuntu from LiveCD, that the user isn't added to the admin group. That implies that something went wrong during the installation - IMO.

Re: kde sudo login and kde wallet

Thanks Snowhog & claydoh. Adding me as user to the admin group has now allowed access.
However, I still do not understand why on initial bootup I always get two GUI windows asking me to logon to each as kde sudo for the two windoze partitions. Any thoughts on this, please?
Additionally, why are all the errors, etc, listed when launching dolphin from terminal as per my previous reply to this problem? As Snowhog says - it implies something went wrong during the installation. However, this recent installation went along quite smoothly with nothing untoward observed - from my limited knowledge of Linux.
I would be interested to hear of further thoughts on this, to perhaps assist others in the *ubuntu community experiencing similar gremlins?

Re: kde sudo login and kde wallet

Launching any GUI application from a console results in what you are referring to as 'errors' - they are not errors.

As to the two windows partitions. Are they identified in your /etc/fstab or did you instead, identify them for automatic mounting in System Settings? If the latter, that would account for the login prompts, and that can be remedied by adding them to your /etc/fstab instead.

                        Thanks Snowhog.
If they are not errors, then why the extensive repetition of 'unsupported operations' and 'invalid models' listed?
The two Windows partitions are listed in /etc/fstab.

Open KPackagekit and search on ntfs-3g and ntfs-config (I believe that's right). One or both are likely not installed. Install them. This gives you read/write access to Windows NTFS partitions. Then, with the partitions in your /etc/fstab, you won't be prompted for a password.

Thanks Snowhog. ntfs-config wasn't installed, but is now and looks good.
Should it have automatically installed at initial installation of ubuntu?
