connecting to wireless net help

so i cant get ku10.10 to connect to my wireless. its confirmed working, as booting back to windows can access the web, and my cellphone wifi can still access it.

its a linksys 4 port w 54g, set to non broadcast ssid on channel 3, with wep 64 bit, and dhcp set up for wireless (my home wired net is all manaul)

now, under edit network connection, its set to connect auto, the ssid is typed in correctly, the mode is infra, i typed in the routers reported mac in the bssid slot (tried without it too?), restrict to interphase is on any, mtu is automatic. under security tab, it says none, and wont let me change it, none is all that is listed. under ip address tab its set to auto dhcp.

buuut nothing happens. if i select scan next to ssid, it doesnt do anything, nor find my, or any of my neighbors nets that are usually atleast viewable.

what am i missing?

under the network monitor widget it lists wlan0, but never has any input/output, even when i press the scan button in the net connection settings. also noticed, under scan, the drop down for interphases is not accessible.

ps. mb= asus p5w dh deluxe w oboard wireless, realtek rtl8187?

The Wifi module has not been tested but it should work since kernel version 2.6.23. The needed modules should be:
r8180 or r8187 for the module itself
ieee80211_crypt-rtl for WEP and WPA encryption
ieee80211_crypt_wep-rtl for WEP encryption
ieee80211_crypt_tkip-rtl for WPA TKIP encryption
ieee80211_crypt_ccmp-rtl for WPA CCMP encryption
ieee80211-rtl for the r8187 module

do i have to download all those things to make it work?

first is your wireless Linksys WRT54G as I use this and maybe able to help...
secound I allways broadcast my SSID at least during settup of new connections it will help you know if drivers for wireless card are installed correctly...if you don't see SSID than check them....

yea wrt54g model.

i tried enabling the ssid broadcast but it still wont pick it up.

im def thinking its hardware realated though cause im pretty sure when you click the scan button in the wireless settings there SHOULD be something listed... like, the wireless net settings are done and correct, but it doesnt know to look for the wireless adapter itself?

if you click the scan button, does it list something under interphase? like the name of your wireless card or driver etc?

Yes you should see something when you use scan which leads me to think drivers are not right
Now check your drivers for card in computer your trying to connect to net...
had same problem with mine didn't have drivers installed correctly.....or wrong drivers....
after I fixed that I saw my SSID...

if you understand commands in terminal,open term and type lspci it will list all pci connected devices
I use a Linksys wirelesss card in comp but it reads the chip on card, list it as a Ralink RT2600 look at
what is listed beside Network controller and install drivers for that.......

also don't worry about settings just try to see your SSID once you can see it than you just need to set up wep and password
leave other settings blank or default which is what works for me
when you click scan you will see all the SSIDs in range of your computer......it will open a small window with a diagram showing them..... click on yours then click ok, it will return to settings window......

Another thing to consider is that while the correct driver may be loaded for the wifi card, and the physical device (card) may be turned on, the device (wlan0) may not be up.

Try in a konsole:

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

i did lspci, and i dont see anything wireless related. (i have 2x 1gb ethernet ports, thats correct, but no wifi that i can see?)
then i did if config, then finally the wlan0 up but it gave me an error that it didnt exist.

Ho. First post, same problem I was having.

My home net is set up to _not_ broadcast the SSID; I enter it manually. Did that this time. DHCP's turned off; I entered my IP address (and other addresses) as needed. The stupid thing _still_ wouldn't connect (although a wireless scan showed me two _neighbor_ networks that I hadn't known were there...).

Someone earlier in the thread suggested that even if you don't broadcast your SSID, turn ON the broadcast while testing. I did that just now, and hey! presto the Kubuntu laptop connected. It's currently bringing down a handful of new updates.

So if all else fails, make your router actually visible to the laptop and see if that gets you connected. I don't like broadcasting my SSID, so I'm going to see if turning it back off (after updating) loses me my connection. Gonna be frustrating if so.

Ok it doesn't connect through pci system lets try lsusb command to see what you have listed there.....

My laptop list my card on the pci but maybe yours is usb....

We have to find it first in Kubuntu to see what drivers you need..in your first post you list some packages did you install those? did the system say you needed them

In lynux you use packages it can take lots of them to do one thing like a driver...if you install one piece of it,it will tell you the rest that are needed to complete it, always install what it suggests...

My first experience with Kubuntu was really bad setting up my wireless took me three days of searching this forum to find all that I needed...But I'am glad I stayed with it..My laptop is 10 yrs old and the only thing I've done to it is install Kubuntu and it works great..

Install your drivers and everything else it says you need... When you install programs or drivers it will open a small window saying that these packages are also needed make sure to install them also...if nothing else is needed you won't get that window... then shutdown comp and reboot to make sure they are installed.....make sure you are broadcasting your SSID... go to Network Management Click scan to find it..click on it than click OK and setup from there

how do you install the drivers for it? they are only available on thier website for windows?

i tried that "windows wireless drivers" program and pointed it to the windows drivers, it adds netrtuw and says hardware present: yes, but when you click config network it gives an error message:

There was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. The message returned by the system was: could not read network connection list. /root/.DCOPserver_darkstar_0 Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running.

Click ok and:

Will not save config, config file root/.kde/share/config/kcmshellrc not writable and config file ..../kdeglobals not writable. contact admin.

if i do the linux application/system/additional drivers, it doesnt find any hardware to add.

I see two problems 1: windows drivers 2:wireless is listed as device 10
you should look up a program called ndiswrapper it helps lynux communicate with windows drivers
