[SOLVED] Converting from another Linux distro: Thunderbird email and folders?

I want to switch from another Linux distro to Kubuntu: how to handle my Thunderbird email and folders?
(The Kubuntu Transitioners forum is for users coming from Window$ or Mac, so I thought I'd ask here).

Most everything else I'd guess would be straight forward, as I am installing Kubuntu on a second box: install all the sw I want, copy personal files. But I am a little nervous about how to transition email and folder structure.

On current PC, I use Thunderbird to retrieve mail for three accounts, so each account has its own files; In each account I have set up numerous folders, and also I have some rules to move certain incoming mail to specific folders based on originating addresses. I don't mind needing to recreate the rules if necessary, I just don't want to loose all my emails. ;-)

Current Thunderbird version on box #1 is 2.0.0.8.

I assume I can use Thunderbird on Kubuntu but I really don't mind which email client I use as long as it works in KDE/Kubuntu.

    Thanks for any advice.

kmail has an import feature which includes filters for thunderbird (incl. folder structures et al.)

What Linux distro are you using now?
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

        +1, Toad!

A few months ago I decided to switch from Thunderbird to KMail. It's import feature didn't lose a single msg, dating all the way back to 2006. It did put everything into subdirectories of the imported main directory and I had some re-arranging to do, but that didn't take long.

You can still use Thunderbird, and keep your entire mail structures, filters, etc simply by installing thunderbird and copying your /home/<username>/.mozilla (or is it /.mozilla-thenderbird or similar) folder to your new home directory.

But I am am longtime Kontact lover, it does a great job importing mail folders. I myself did not import filters and rules - I didn't notice that feature, but that was so long ago now it probably has changed.

Thunderbird 3.1.6 Copy your personal settings and Mail directory to a flash drive or a cd. Then install thunderbird
in kubuntu and go through the thunderbird setup. The files in kubuntu will be in .thunderbird under your home directory and your email will be in a subdirectory xxxxxxxx.default which is generated when you run the rhunderbird setup. Then copy your original files to the xxxxxxxx.default directory. (xxxxxxxx=a generated name)

Thank you all. I am much more comfortable now about converting to Kubuntu.
(In answer to a previous question, I am on an older version of Gentoo.)
