              That is very suspect shaolin. Did you upgrade to 10.10 or do a fresh install? If you upgraded, it might be worthwhile to reinstall everything. it's weird that you're not getting an error message at least.

                Perhaps. IF you like KDE then either Linux Mint KDE or PCLinuxOS 2010.7 should be nice options.

                    Maverick is a very nice distro IF your video, audio and wireless chips are not too old. Personally, from my experience with it I wouldn't use it on a laptop older than three years unless it passed a thorough LiveCD test.

                    PCLinuxOS was a spinoff of Mandriva, but they've gone on their own so long now that they are independent of Mandriva. But, if you've had any experience with Mandriva you've run PCLinuxOS. For about 18 months it was the #1 distro on DistroWatch, starting around 2007.

                      Just for the heck of it, would you post the exact make and model of your computer? I want to pull up the specs just to see if anything interesting jumps out.

                          so would it be better if i go with PCLinuxOS or mandriva? the only linux that i have had experience in the passed is kubuntu/ubuntu and fedora/fedora kde
