Maverick is a very nice distro IF your video, audio and wireless chips are not too old. Personally, from my experience with it I wouldn't use it on a laptop older than three years unless it passed a thorough LiveCD test.
PCLinuxOS was a spinoff of Mandriva, but they've gone on their own so long now that they are independent of Mandriva. But, if you've had any experience with Mandriva you've run PCLinuxOS.
