    cannot install

so I am quite a newbie here. I have Ubuntu dual boot with windows xp on another computer and am really digging this OS.

I decided to try to revive an unused laptop to use in the kitchen, and decided on Kubuntu, I thought I would try a slightly different flavor of linux.

I have downloaded Kubuntu and written it to a USB flash drive. I can get it to run just fine from the flash drive as a try me without installing situation. When I go to install it onto the hard drive, it will get as far as the Prepare page and once you hit forward, it seems to get hung up and will not go any further. I have tried downloading again and reloading it onto the flash drive, formatting it first, a couple of times and have even tried it with Ubuntu with the same results.

I know that this computer has some hard drive issues, so I swapped out another hard drive that I had, hoping that, that was the issue and it still does the same thing.

any help that I can get will be much appreciated.

    Thanks

do you have the option to use a liveCD instead? If not, does a different flash drive work? I've had lots of problems with corrupted flash.

sorry about the lack of info here are the specs on the laptop.

          1.6 intel celeron M
          2 gig ram
          80 gig HD internal
          dvd/cdrw combo optical drive

I am trying to install the latest version 10.10
I have been using a Kingston 4g flash drive, brand new and formatted fat32 for this purpose.
There is a version of windows XP on this HD, and I don't mind if it is overwritten, I am not trying to install using wubi.

          Hope this helps

I haven't tried live cd, I am not sure how well the optical drive works on this machine, it makes a lot of noise when there is a disc in there. I will pick up some cd-r and see if that route will work.

              Re: cannot install

you could if you have net wile runing the live usb install Gparted and use it to prepartition the drive and see if that helps....or use fdisk if your bold.

I have found the installer to have trouble some times at the paritioning part.

but have not tryed the 10.10 ver. yet

I would go with a CD if the flash drive doesnt work. You could also choose a different flash drive, but if flash is failing, then definately go with optical disk drive. If the one on your lappy doesn't work, than see if you can use an external, or see if you can swap drives out of a different computer with working cd/dvd drive. I don't know how old this computer is, but hopefully it does not use usb 1.1 :P

Thanks everyone with all of your kindness and help. I made a disk, I used a dvd+r since I had no Cd-rs and it worked. Even with all the racket from the drive, it still installed properly.

If I need any more help, I'll be back.

                  Thanks again!

I'd encourage you to become a 'regular' here in KFN, even if it's just to browse the boards. KFN is unique among the 'KDE specific' Linux forums on the Internet, IMO. Others agree.

Glad to here that you you got Kubuntu installed. I think that you will find it a likable OS, and and a worthy alternative to Windows.
