my laptop comes with a cool slide out remote control that normally controlled windows media center. I just wanted to know if theres a way i can map its buttons to kb shortcuts that control VLC or some other media player?

OK, I don't have one of these, so I can't give first hand help. But you might have a look at:
konqueror /usr/share/doc/lirc/html/table.html
This is where the documentation is in Maverick, anyway. This is a list of supported devices. Maybe you can tell if yours is there.
You might also try running jockey-kde, and see if it can come up with a driver for your remote.
Also man lircd, but like many man pages, it's by engineers, for engineers.
