One can't concider replacing KNetworkmanager with Wicd if you aren't able to get KNetworkmanager to actually connect to the Internet.

Had to re-read through this thread. Forgot that I helped provide you with the Wicd files needed, and that Wicd is installed, and it actually does run, but it can't locate an IP address - can't see the router.

After installing all of Wicd, did you go through the process of removing/purging KNetworkmanager? I didn't see that you did. KNetworkmanager and Wicd don't coexist together well. In fact, Wicd won't connect to a wireless AP if KNetworkmanager is still installed.

Open a console and type:

sudo apt-get remove --purge modemmanager network-manager network-manager-openconnect network-manager-openvpn network-manager-pptp network-manager-vpnc knm-runtime network-manager-kde plasma-widget-networkmanagement

This will remove completely, KNetworkmanager and it's offending (to Wicd) pieces. Then shutdown and restart, launch Wicd and see if it sees your wireless network name (SSID).

Do you have KPackagekit running? You can't perform package management from the CLI with it running.

As far as I can tell kpackagekit is not running, although synaptic was so I'll try again with that closed

ok that time it worked only telling me that modemmanager wasnt installed nor was network-manager-openconnect and it couldnt find network-manager--openvpn

Yup. Synaptic too. Both KPackagekit and Synaptic 'lock' the /var/lib/dpkg/ directory.

Okay. We've eliminated any possibility of a conflict between KNetworkmanager and Wicd. What needs resolving now, is why your /etc/hosts file does not contain an IP from your router.

From the console, what does ifconfig -a show?

Unless that is a typo in your reply, you identified the package for removal incorrectly.
It isn't network-manager--openvpn; it's network-manager-openvpn (single dash).

Actually we need to take a step back, while following another trouble shooting somewhere I uninstalled wicd and several of the required packages need downloaded.

yes that was a typo in the console but i fixed it, it wasnt installed anyways though

Well, that wasn't a good move. That means you have no networkmanager installed. But you do still have all the wicd packages, yes?

Can you connect your PC to the router by wire? If you can, do so and reboot. Then reinstall wicd. You should then have a working network connection.

Even if you don't, you need to reinstall wicd, which should not be a problem, as you have (yes?) the packages I made available to you.
