how to turn off the laptop screen when monitor is connected

I haven't been here in awhile, but I just noticed that when my laptop is connected to my monitor via the vga port both the screens are on and it makes my laptop really hot. Is there any way that I can turn off the screen for my laptop and just have it on the monitor? I tried changing it through system settings, but I don't see how I can do this in display.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't tried it, but it should work if you change your laptop screen to disabled (in System Settings -> Display and Monitor). Have you tried it?

If you really want some help - you'll need to provide some information, laptop model, video card, how your video is set up, do you have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, how do you want this to work...

There are several ways to turn off the laptop monitor but suggesting which method(s) will work or fit your desires can't be done without more info.
