sudo: unable to lookup srvanv_003a via gethostbyname()

    Hello everyone !

I have a problem, I installed Kubuntu 5.10, with firefox and everything and it worked great.

My machines name has allways been "box", a few days ago I changed it to srvanv_003, to make it fit in the network here. Scince then su doesn't work anymore, I have no more root acces, I can't "edit as root" in kde, or if I want to change the hostname file with "sudo nano /etc/hostname" it allways gives "sudo: unable to lookup srvanv_003a via gethostbyname()"

    Any ideas ?

The problem is that you have to change the name in both /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname at the the same time because you can't change the second one after you change the first. So to recue your system, use a live cd (I use Knoppix) to edit BOTH files to the same name. If you ever want to change the name again. Use the command "kdesu kate", open both files, change them both and then close them both.

      thanks for the reply askrieger.

Is there absolutely no other way to get root acces back ?
My internet is so slow it took me 72hrs to get kubuntu, if I have to get a koppix livecd, it will take 72 more...

searching the forums I found out what to change:

      /etc/hosts >> 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost box

      box should be srvanv003

      any ideas anyone ?
