Computer gets stuck at start splash!

Hi guys well this a prob im having lately..and its pretty weird since it just started 2 days ago and its creeping the hell out of me. The thing is that each time i turn on the computer it gets stuck at the splash image...and wont load...i have to turn off the computer the hard way by pressing the button till turns off and turn it back on and then is when it works fine...idk..an ideas?? Should i do a check to the hard disk?? and the beginning of the computer if so how should i do it??

    Thanks KIra.

does dmesg reporting anything after you get it to boot?

by splash do you mean the login splash or boot splash?

disk check w/ fsck (use fsck --help or man fsck to get more info)

and to put a finer point on it - if it's loading the KDE splash (the one after the log in) which icon does it freeze on?

Another way to get some info is - instead of logging in via the graphic screen, switch to a terminal via ATL-CTRL-F1 and log in via the text console, Then type sudo service kdm restart and enter your password when prompted. This should automatically restart the graphic log in screen. Then if your graphic log in fails - switch back to the terminal (ALT-CTRL-F1) and report what the console output is. There might be an error there.
