Hey Help would be Greatly Appreciated!

im having a few problems, i am new to ubuntu and kubuntu and fairly savvy. i tested out ubuntu and was really happy with it. decided to totally wipe my laptop clean and put Kubuntu on it. since ive done this ive had nothing but problems but maybe its just cause im knew.

ok first off. no matter what i type into the " Run a Command" dialogue box i press enter - NOTHING happens. ive been browsing forums trying to find out how to install stuff. entering commands into this box sounds like an important thing so not being able to do it is really killlin me.

my batter power wont charge over 58% for some reason

my email wont actually get my mail even tho it says its connected fine

my wifi will not connect even tho all of it is set up right

i found where to add the download sources "repositories" ... but ... for example trying to get VLC player...
    the directions are too:

    Graphical way
Open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager). In Settings -> Repositories, make sure you have an universe repository activated.
Search for vlc and install it. You should install vlc-plugin-pulse/ and mozilla-plugin-vlc as well.
If you are interested in streaming or transcoding, you should additionnally install libavcodec-extra-52 from a multiverse repository.Ok this first way when i look up VLC player, it finds a whole bunch of VLC stuff, but nothing to install. under File List for ALL of them there are 0 files.

    Command line way
You need to check that a universe mirror is listed in your /etc/apt/sources.list file.
    % sudo apt-get update
    % sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc
This way i assume i type these lines into a "Run this Command" dialogue box... but like i said, when i do this, or any other command line, when i press enter it does notihng...

    ANY help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you know that the problem is not your battery? Batteries do not live forever and lose there charge. What makes you think that it is capable of charging to 100%?
my email wont actually get my mail even tho it says its connected fine
What email program are you using? Have you double checked the configuration?
my wifi will not connect even tho all of it is set up right
How do you know that it is set up right? Does is find any wifi signals at all? What is your wifi card? Open Konsole Terminal Program and issue the command: lspci ...or lsusb if it is usb. What appears against: Network Controller?

I have never heavily used the Run command. I have used it mostly for starting some programs. Find a graphical program you have installed. I have Gweled. If I type Gweled in Run command than the program starts.

Installing VLC. Do you have Synaptic? If you don't, open Konsole Terminal Program and issue the command: sudo apt-get install synaptic. Or to use the CLI method of installing VLC open Konsole Terminal Program and issue the command: sudo apt-get install vlc

Also, instead of running commands in the "Command Box" run them in a terminal. Much more useful information will be shown about why the command failed. You can then copy and paste the info here in the forum.

          Hi....

          Me three.

Just to confirm, this is your laptop, correct?

I installed Kubuntu 10.04 a few weeks ago on my dv9830us and although everything I have tested and worked with so far has installed perfectly out of the box, setting up my wireless connection was definitely a trick. It's not as straightforward as it is in Windows 7, unfortunately.

incorrect. you should be running all bash commands inside konsole. alt+f2 (the "run a command" box) is really intended to be a quick way to run programs as opposed to opening the konsole and doing it that way.

              So,
              Code:
              sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc
should be run from inside konsole. you can get to konsole from the k menu under system applications or you can alt+f2 and type in konsole. That should take care of that problem.

For your mail issue, I'd recommend running kontact from within konsole so that, if there's an error, you'll get the information from the konsole. I'm not positive but I have a hunch that your wifi issue is tied to your mail issue. so we need to see some errors, particularly time-outs or similar.

Tip: You do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the web page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press your mouse wheel or mouse middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

Re: Hey Help would be Greatly Appreciated!

My laptop has hardware/software which limits the battery charge to 80%.

It's a Sony so I suspect it does this for a couple reasons. One is to avoid a possible fire when over charging. The second is that Lithium Ion batteries do not do well when continually run to empty and charged to 100%. So, staying between 10% and 80% will increase the life of your battery.

I get about 2 to 2.5 hours on an 80% to 5% discharge, and about 90 minutes if I play a video.

I treat my battery as an UPS device, not a primary power source.
