Installed programs won't show up

    Installed programs won't show up

    I'm running Kubuntu LL 10.04 Netbook Remix on an Asus EEE PC 1005HAB netbook. When I install programs they don't show up right away. Last night I installed fooball (billiards game) with KPackageKit and it didn't show up until after a restart. I have since installed Synaptic. I used it to install Gimp, which also didn't show until after a restart. I installed Eqonimize! and it showed up immediately. But I just now installed K3b and it's not showing up. I can start it from a command line but the icon is nowhere to be found.

    Is there some setting I'm missing or some command I'm forgetting to run? Or is this a Netbook Remix problem? BTW: It looks like I'm running KDE version 4.4.2. Should I upgrade that?

    If you type the app name in the text box in the K menu, does it still not show up?

    4.4.2 is quite outdated, current Kde 4.4 version is 4.4.5. You can install it by opening Synaptic and under Settings > Repositories > Other add the following repository:
    ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa

    You can also install the new Kde 4.5, which is running fine for me. Kde 4.5.1 is due out today or tomorrow. Just add the following repository in Synaptic:
    ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
    Shinda Sekai Sensen<br /><br />Kubuntu Maverick RC x64 w/ Kde 4.5.2 (main)<br />Kubuntu 10.04 x64 w/ Kde 4.5.1 to be wiped, no point in keeping it any longer

      Check and see if "locate" is installed.

      whereis locate
      If it is there then you can do
      sudo updatedb
      to hasten things along.

      IF whereis doesn't show "/usr/bin/locate" then use Synaptic to install "mlocate", the newer version of "locate".

      KDE 4.5 is awesome. IF you can I'd update to it.

        Yuri, I don't have a K menu. The netbook remix just has group icons on the desktop. It's actually kind of annoying that way. I might try out the "full" LL live cd and see if my machine can handle it.

        GreyGeek: updatedb didn't seem to work. Thanks anyway.

        Based on both of your recommendations I'll update to KDE 4.5 and see if things get any better. Thanks both of you.

          Mlocate is run by the chron service daily. You could move it to /etc/chron.hourly to make it update more often.

          Updatedb freshens the database the "locate" (alias for mlocate) uses to find files by names or parts of names. It is a VERY quick way to find files in your system.

          If you install something and then can't run it from the console it is because the install program didn't save the binary in a directory which is in your path.

          /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
          When you issue a command, $PATH (and the present working directory -pwd - referenced by ".") are the only locations searched for the program. If you set up a menu option you can point to the binary or startup script where ever it is located, and you can assign the "working directory" to be where the app expects to see its files.

            I didn't have any problems starting the programs from the command line. They simply wouldn't show up on the desktop.

            I tried the live cd version of the full desktop edition and it worked on my machine so I did a fresh install of it. I'm not seeing any more problems with programs not showing up. I wonder if that's specific to the netbook remix version.
