EVDO modem doesnt get detected on kubuntu 10.04... HELP!

Hi, i have recently installed kubuntu 10.04, my usb evdo modem doesn't get detected on it, theres no activity what so ever i even have to plug it in twice before the it lights up, i am not sure what the problem is. it worked perfectly fine ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 but there seems to be something wrong with the current version.

Kindly let me me what i need to do, i am new to linux and figuring out what to do with ubutnu 8.04 was difficult enough

    Would appreciate any help!

i am afraid its not that easy after i found out i didnt have wvdial installed on kubuntu by default (which is weird) i installed as the above link suggests, but my modem still doesnt get detected.

i had been following other solutions as well, did a modprobe and got this error,

FATAL: Error inserting usbserial (/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/usbserial.ko) : Operation not permitted

Did you attempt the modprobe as 'root' - sudo modprobe

seems like there is a possible solution, but i dont understand what "CONFIG_USB_SERIAL_GENERIC=y" is all about
