    Dual Booting with XP

    I'm back

I've got Lucid 10.04 installed already and since there are a couple of games I would like to check out and can't play on wine or virtualbox, I'll need to install windoze. So I'm gonna make a little 30GB partition for it. What should I do to get it working without having to reinstall Kubuntu?

    Thanks,
    ElWray

      ElWray;

I suggest you install a couple of Linux games. They're getting better every year.

      1. BOS Wars

      2. Adanaxis

      Good luck.

        @mhumm2:

I'd be glad to try them out but there is one game I really can't play on linux sadly.

Any list of good strategy games and shooters for linux, or your recommendations?

        Thanks for your replies,

          Bummer!

OK, here's what it says, summarized:

          1. Use a partitioning tool to open up space on your Linux partition, and then slide the Linux partition to the right so your Windows space is on the left, in the GParted graphic. Link to tool.

          2. Install Windows, and watch it wipe out your Grub menu and install its own bootloader on the MBR of your hard drive.

          3. Use your Kubuntu Live CD to re-install Grub, and use the os-prober to let it find and set up Windows on the menu.

You'll need Qqmike's Grub 2 guide to do Step 3.

So I guess I'll need to shrink my linux partition first. This might sound stupid, but is there a way to merge 2 partitions?
If that's not possible, how much space does linux need anyway? I gave it 20 GB when I first installed it and it stayed that way since ( bad habit I got from MS ) but so far it's not taking away any more than 2 GB.

            Thanks,

              Re: Dual Booting with XP

The bare OS only needs 5 or 6 GB, but that doesn't allow any space for downloads or saved data. In the GParted graphic you can see how much of the partition is used -- it is filled in with color.

You are allowed 4 primary partitions on a hard drive, and if you make one of them "extended", then you can put logical partitions in it. Combining partitions sounds like a bad idea -- it's not really possible. You can combine the space by deleting one and expanding the other, but everything in the deleted one gets nuked.

                Re: Dual Booting with XP

Ok so in that case, copying the data from the big storage partition (I got one where I keep music and stuff like that) to /home and then deleting that + expanding /home will save me a lot of trouble, correct?

Also, I got 4 GB of RAM so in that case, do I really need swap space (the memory is much faster than the HDD anyway)? Got about 4GB for swap as well and if that's unnecessary, I could go right ahead and wipe that out too; that way I'd end up with only 2 partitions.

                  Re: Dual Booting with XP

That depends on how you have your partitions sized (it would be a disaster to do that on my rig). If the partition where you have the OS installed is larger than the partition where your music and data files are, then yes, just copy your data into your /home/user directory, and then you can delete the partition that your music was on.

The second question also is "it depends". 4GB of RAM is plenty for normal user stuff. But, you might need a swap space if you

                  - ever want to "hibernate" (suspend to disk)
                  - use resource-hungry (like Win 7) VMs, and want to give them a lot of memory

So, if you can live happily with no hibernation and no VMs, then you don't need swap.

                    Re: Dual Booting with XP

The OS partition right now is 24GB. I'll add 4 more from the swap cause I don't need that. Are 14 GB enough for linux?
Then 14 more for XP and another partition of 40GB at the end (I only intend to use windows for a few games and Flash).

                    Would that be ok?

                    Thanks,

14GB is more than enough for the Linux OS.

                        Hi all....

I would be curious to know what "legal and commercial reasons" Romania has for blocking this site.

It came up fine here is the USA.

This looks like a cool game except being able to shoot a given target is extremely difficult.

It's not Romania blocking the site. They blocked all Romanian IPs
And to me at least the reason is pretty obvious. Lots of script kiddies love to break things and do illegal stuff here. Maybe something like that happened to 'em.
Anyway...any idea how long resizing those partitions could take?
I gotta make sure I have enough time...otherwise I'll have to take care of it this weekend

                              Thanks,
