    Re: Dual Booting with XP

    The last time I resized a large partition, it took several hours. Maybe you want to let it run overnight while you are sleeping, or something like that.

      Ah, I see. Thank you for explaining this although it's pretty unfortunate.

        Well, I'll just deal with it this weekend. I'll post a reply here when I'm done.

        Thanks a lot,

          Re: Dual Booting with XP

          You might not need to go through the hassle and install Faildows, current Wine 1.3.1 is pretty good and can be installed from here:
          https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa

          Install wine1.3 and winetricks. Then, from a Konsole window, use winetricks d3dx9 to download and install DirectX 9 on Wine. You can see a list with winetricks --help in case an app needs special vc runtimes or something.
          As long as you don't use brandnew and super-demanding games which just came out, chances are good it'll run well.
          What games do you run?
          You can look in the AppDB how well your games run:
          http://appdb.winehq.org/

          Some apps only have old version entries (1.1 or before), and matters will most likely have improved by now.
          For best performance, you should install the proprietary driver for your graphics card (fglrx is for Ati) from here:
          https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates

            Re: Dual Booting with XP

            Well, now I finally managed to get Photoshop CS4 working with PlayOnLinux.
            So I'm just trying to run AvP2 (from 2001 - Aliens vs Predator 2) and a mod for it. Last time I tried it I couldn't move and had some serious mouse axis problems.
            I also want to check out Portal and it just won't install. I got a cracked version too but with that I can only start the game with some .bat files and I don't know how to run those (on linux).
            So, yeah, IF there is a way I could run .bat files, all my problems are solved.
            The 2nd option would be to use virtualbox but each time I try to start the games I get this error: "Couldn't set D3D emulation mode."

            Thanks,

              AvP2 page is here, just pick the proper version:
              http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...ation&iId=2838

              Always check the bottom of the page, which often has hints and workarounds for known problems. E.g. the AvP2 1.0.9.6 page has the following hints at the bottom:

              Making mouse work better
              Original Idea by Pac Shady, tested on 1.1.7

              * Set the mouse smoothness to maximum
              * Turn on virtual desktop
              * Run wine with WINEDEBUG=-all

              Additionally you can try:

              * Install dx9 (not necessary at the moment, but still you can try)
              * Set maximum possible for you screen resolution or set 640x480. Depends on perfomance.

              That makes the mouse movement work in all directions quite good, but mouselook speed on X axis is different from Y axis. On wide and opened areas which really consume performance, this bug gives the biggest effect.

              Portal page is here:
              http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...rsion&iId=9432

              At the bottom of the page there is a Howto on how to install and run it.

              Open a Konsole window, switch to the directory where your .bat file is and try:
              wine xyz.bat

              Not an option, because Virtualbox doesn't support Direct3D emulation, thus you can't run 3D games in it.

                Re: Dual Booting with XP

                Yup, solved w/ the cracked portal.
                However, it's different. Here's how I got it working.

                Moved to the game directory;
                Then "wine cmd" to open the ms command prompt
                Then "Play-Portal.bat"

                And it worked
                AvP2 also works now.

                Thanks a lot,
