Can't connect to Airport w/ security

Good Morning,

A bit green to Kubuntu, so please be patient.
Have Lucid 10.4 installed on my Toshiba Sat. notebook, and I'm having some problems connecting via Wireless to my Apple Base-station/router. Wired works just ducky (I'm on now). Wireless with no security setting works just fine, too. However if I try to enable WEP encryption (my other desktop computer does not support WPA, so can't use), I am unable to connect.

I'm using WICD network manager, and have tried all 3 possible WEP settings (WEP Hex, WEP Passphrase, and WEP Shared/Restricted). I've tried entering the literal text of my network password (very simple one for testing purposes), as well as the "HEX equivalent" provided by the base-station software. Every permutation (6 possible, right?), and none of them can connect (reports back bad password every time). Yet when I disable security, she connects up just fine and runs great (so I'm pretty sure this isn't a hardware issue).

Any idea's where to start troubleshooting?

That means that you (likely) did not remove all the packages related to knm when you installed wicd. This is a known problem. See GreyGeek's comment to Re: 3 problems

Thanks for the help Snowhog. I had no idea those two conflicted (you'd think that would be noted for apt to not let both be installed w/o saying something?)
I tried the process as described, but I still can't 'get connected'. I believe it gets a little further however... Now it dies on "obtaining IP address", and will just sit there forever.... Click the cancel button, no connection exists, I have to switch back to the wired link to get online.

Are there other packages that conflict w/ Wicd? I've probably installed a dozen or so random one's hoping to find something that fixed this (or one of my other) problem(s).

I recently switched to Kubuntu, so don't know all the in's and out's just yet. I used Portage on my last machine, and it did a pretty good job of catching conflicts and the like. Can that be used as a replacement for apt?

Most of us use Synaptic, but none of the package managers will "catch" knetworkmanager and wicd as conflicting package because technically, they aren't - no more than kmail conflicts with thunderbird.

I think the problem really is that knetworkmanager is so dis-functional that it causes the conflict.

Back to your issue: post the output of sudo ifconfig -a from a terminal and attach a copy of /etc/network/interfaces to your next post.

Verify you have wpasupplicant installed. There should be error output in dmesg when you fail to connect. Open a terminal and type dmesg in it and review the messages. What steps are you going through that fail?

Synaptic tells me I have0.6.9-3ubuntu3 installed for wpasupplicant (not showing any updates avail).

I've just been using the GUI for QWicd... It see's my base-station (and the neighbors, and a few others), I've set the properties as appropriate (and tried all 3 flavors of WPA), tried using both the literal text for the password, and the hash that the Airport software on my Mac tells me to use for non-airport cards (works for our Wii, so I'm fairly certain it's kosher)...
