Hello my friends. I'm a new linux user and I just subscribed to your excellent site. I'd like to ask a few questions because I urgently need to fix my new kubuntu 10.04 for my job and can't take my mind of the bugs. I freshly installed a kubuntu 10.04 amd64 on my acer5920 on the brand new momentus xt. Everytime trying to lock the screen by control alt L the password dialog box is not visible. I can only see a grey rectangle without white box to type in. Nevertheless, whenever I type blindly my password, I manage to unlock it. I changed and screensavers but the problem persists. Thank you so much in advance

Just change the Theme you are using and see if that makes a difference. Often time, it's the Theme itself that fosters these types of 'issues.'Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Re: Password Dialog Box Unlocking Screen not visible
Dear friend, no matter what theme I choose, the problem insists. And along with that, everytime I start X windows the slide wallpapers don't work, I have to reenable it. I don't know if that helped or it's just a coinsidence

How long ago did you install 10.04? Since then, have you performed regular updates and dist-upgrades to your installed packages? What version of KDE are you running? Start any application from the K Menu (Dolphin say) and then click on it's Help > About KDE to find out.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Re: Password Dialog Box Unlocking Screen not visible
Dear Snowhog. Thank you for your interest. I just bought a new momentus XT (10 days ago) and I formatted my PC fpr more than 5 times to make my linux get working. Each time I encountered a problem I had no alternative but to format. Thank God that this superb site exists and helped me to solved many issues. I have 4-5 more, one of these is the unlocking password box. My KDE is the latest, 4.4.2 and I update all the packages I can. I don't want to return to Windows I love linux but I'm still a newbie

Re: Password Dialog Box Unlocking Screen not visible
KDE 4.4.2 is not the latest in the 4.4 series. You want to upgrade to KDE 4.4.5. That alone will likely resolve many, if not all, of your issues.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Re: Password Dialog Box Unlocking Screen not visible
What happens if you press ctrl+alt+esc and kill the empty space? Actually it lets me see my desktop, my panel, my widgets, everything... but I can change the folder view settings (the static one that automatically covers all the wallpaper so to say) to show my desktop shortcuts like we did it on Hardy before KDE4 was included in *buntu.Multibooting: Kubuntu Noble 24.04
Before: Jammy 22.04, Focal 20.04, Precise 12.04 Xenial 16.04 and Bionic 18.04
Win XP, 7 & 10 sadly

Re: Password Dialog Box Unlocking Screen not visible
I just checked the control alt esc thing but nothing happened. About the KDE upgrade option, my kpackage kit notifies me for latest upgrades. I have only unckecked the pre-relseased updates so as to avoid unstable versions. I have and other issues while restarting my X windows. I don't know if that has also to do with the KDE version.

Re: Password Dialog Box Unlocking Screen not visible
In order to be able to upgrade to KDE 4.4.5, you need to add the kubuntu-ppa/ppa repository. Open Software Sources (K Menu > System > Software Sources), click on the Other Software tab, click on Add... and then copy/paste the following:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
Click Add Source and then click Close. You will be told that your package sources needs to be refreshed. Accept that.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Re: Password Dialog Box Unlocking Screen not visible
Did you not follow my advise/instructions to upgrade to KDE 4.4.5? That alone might resolve your problem. The 4.4.5 upgrade is a recommend one, as it fixes many bugs in the earlier 4.4.x releases.Windows no longer obstructs my view.
