Yes, either a firewall, or the internet connection isn't working.

Could it be that an MSCE sys admin is deliberately blocking ubuntu.com ?

I'm not sure that an MSCE sysadmin would have even heard of Linux. It certainly wasn't covered in his or her course of study.

Try to ping the repos. I'm inclined to think that the school is behind a firewall. If it isn't, I wouldn't trust the grade reports for any student with a computer literate friend.

It may not have been covered in the MSCE courses, but they certainly have encountered it in the course of doing their job because they would have had to connect to a Linux server somewhere. Where I worked we had 6 MSCE working their posteriors off trying to keep 350 Windows workstations going. When they saw my SuSE 6.4 workstation staying up for several hundred days, except when I downed it to plug in a unix hd they wanted data from, the IT head sent his brightest MSCE to RH training. This guy had been dissing Linux from the get-go. When he came back he was a Linux enthusiast. Then .. we elected a governor who was buddies with a Microsoft service rep...
