KDE / Kubuntu repositories explained please....?

    Hey All,

I see that KDE 4.5 is now released. But the repository has changed from ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa for the latest 4.4.x updates to ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports.

Could someone please explain it do this confused person on why 4.5 went into the backports? Would 4.5 ever be in ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa?

    Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

Just one question. After going to 4.5 would you need to keep the ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports active?

AND, in the future will you need ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa AND ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports active? I can see just using the backports as before the changes are officially blessed and places in kubuntu-ppa/ppa, you would stay ahead with the backports if you choose to.

        Is that a correct statement?

Yes, because any Kubuntu patches, as well as any updates (4.5.1 etc.) will also be in backports.
          Shinda Sekai Sensen

Kubuntu Maverick RC x64 w/ Kde 4.5.2 (main)
Kubuntu 10.04 x64 w/ Kde 4.5.1 to be wiped, no point in keeping it any longer

/backports = the next major version -ie upgrading from 4.4.x to 4.5.x
These are literally packages backported from the next Kubuntu version - and often also contain new versions of Qt as well

            /ppa = next minor revision - ie upgrading from 4.4.2 to 4.4.5

you can have both repos enabled, you end up with the latest major revision (4.5.0 currently) as the version in /backports will always be higher than /ppa

The safer bet is to stick with /ppa, the daring bet is to use /backports

imo right now the 4.5 in Maverick feels more stable in Maverick than in Lucid which is to be expected, rather.
