stand by for the next update (and thanks for your patience) .....I am learning a lot !!
    Hi Citrus...

Here is some documentation on your system. If you scroll down down to the "Video" section, you will notice where it states, "Dell Precision 450 computer — AGP Pro 50 at 8x/4x/2x/1x (1.5 V) or PCI" Here, it's giving information on what type of connector you have and what type of card will be compatible with it. You can either choose an AGP Pro x1 through 8 video card or a PCI video card, although AGP is faster. Here is a site that explains this better.

As you've seen, compatibility and drivers are a huge issue and this is the other aspect of finding a good card. From what I understand, Nvidia based graphics cards are better for Linux systems because of better drivers, although I have used ATI, S3, and Intel without too much complication. I'm guessing that with a 5 year old system, you're not doing any extremely high end graphics or gaming but still want or need 3D acceleration for some of the more basic stuff. This card might be a good idea for your system based upon its specs.

You might also want to look at using an older version of Kubuntu that's still supported as 10.04 will probably run slow on your system.

    Hope this helps.

I'm not familiar with your motherboard and CPU -- obviously you don't want to go overboard on a GPU that is beyond the capacity of the rest of your system. However, I'll just point out what's obvious to me (but not necessarily to everyone else):

      - we are visual creatures and interact visually with our computers (the better the visuals, the better the interaction)

      - users with Nvidia problems are vastly outnumbered by users with ATI problems.

So, buy the best Nvidia card you can afford that is comparable in level of performance to the rest of your system. You can get a very respectable card for a cheap price these days: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130560

            Hi...

I'm not sure if you noticed it but the card you linked is PCI Express. His system doesn't have this slot, it's too old.

              Hi...

It's quite possible the cards you are using don't support 3D acceleration as well.

                  Hi...

                  Right on!

So this is the card you purchased on ebay? If so, after you install Kubuntu, be sure to click on the "Hardware Drivers" program to update your graphics drivers. Click on the "K" start button, then "Applications," then "System," and then finally, "Hardware Drivers." After it installs and activates Nvidia's driver, reboot the system and you should be good to go!

Please keep us posted on how everything turns out.

Can I just say thanks to all the folks that helped me troubleshoot this ... the old machine runs kubuntu without issues and all is well in the world .....

now to hijack my own thread ...

we have managed to map our buffalo shared nas using dolphin and all is well ... but would be nice to "see" this drive from the konsole ..

                    we mapped it using smb:/ipaddress/Share

but how do we see it via command line ?

and likewise ..how do we navigate to a memory stick via command line ?

would have thought it might have appeared on the machine ..

The entry from df -k for /media/disk appears to be a 2GB USB stick. Is that what you're looking for?
