Problem with Intel 865G Graphics accelerator!

    Hello!
I am a new user, and installed opensuse 11.3 on my desktop pc about a week ago, now the problem with my computer is this that the graphical performance is very slow, I have Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz processor, with 512 mb ram plus a shared graphic card memory of 32 mb on an IBM thinkcentre. The default graphic driver loaded (as seen through YASt hardware information) is i915 while I read somewhere that default driver for this accelerator is intel. I get about 60 FPS on Glx gears while after applying vesa it goes to about 200 FPS. With default driver the CPU usage is head aching. I created a manual xorg.conf file via Xorg -configure command and set the driver intel and then intellegacy with gaining no boost in performance. The glxinfo says 3D Rendering being enabled while KWIN's desktop effects are too slow and laggy. The CPU keeps working at about 70-100% while movies on youtube and vlc/kaffeine are being played unsmoothly. On the same system, the Kubuntu Live 8.04 gives 500 FPS in glxgears. The output of lsmod is as below:

I also have a laptop Toshiba L300-254 with Intel x4500 VGA.. I installed OpenSuse 11.3 on it and the glxgears reports same FPS on it. while all kwins effects and videos run smoothly without any glitch and the CPU operates normaly at avg 25%. It has loaded the same i915 driver

Re: Problem with Intel 865G Graphics accelerator!

I am not sure that I understand your problem. I THINK (but I may be wrong) that you have been using Kubuntu with no problems, but that when you installed OpenSUSE as a second OS, you started to have difficulty with your graphics controller. If that is the case, the answer is obvious. Get rid of OpenSUSE (unless there is some reason that you need it).

Alternatively, you may be an OpenSUSE user who is having a problem with that distro, and, you find that, the problem does not occur when you boot up with the Ubuntu live CD. In that case, I would think that your problem relates to the version of the driver for your graphics chip that is in use in the two distributions. If this is the case, be patient, keep working with the Kubuntu Live CD until SUSE solves the problem. Of course, this will be facilitated if you report the problem where ever it is that OpenSUSE problems should be reported.

As another alternative, if you have just started using Linux and have found that you have this problem with OpenSUSE that does not occur with Kubuntu, I suggest the following steps:
      (0) Save all the data in "/home/<YourUsername>" directory tree to a removable storage device. I suspect that if you are a new user, you probably don't have to worry about files whose names begin with the character '.' because these are configuration files, and you will probably have to reconfigure your system again, anyway.
      (1) Then, remove the removable media with your backed up personal files.
      (2) Do a fresh install of Kubuntu, reload your /home/<Username>directory tree, and forget about OpenSUSE.

In the bad old days, when only computer geeks ran Linux, it used to take 5 repeated installations for a beginner to get a system running properly, (only 3 for a Linux veteran). Of course, in those days, we had to walk 5 miles barefoot through the snow to go to school (uphill, both ways).

Thanks for your reply, I would try KUBUNTU, then
