Re: Kubuntu with ATI RADEON 9000
First of all, you could install the ATI Radeon proprietary driver package, if you haven't done so already. It is called "fglrx". It provides features for ATI cards that are not included in the open source driver. Of course, if you wish to keep your system completely free of closed source programs, keep squinting.
Second, take a look at the ATI release notes site. the links at the top of the page didn't work for me, but if you scroll down, all the info is there.
Note: I do not have a Radeon 9000 and so I cannot vouch for this suggestion.
Slightly later: It appears that the ATI info is several years old,

Re: Kubuntu with ATI RADEON 9000
Not sure if there is a Gallium driver for R200, but if there is, you could try out that one and see if it works any better for your Radeon 9000.
Perhaps it would've been better not to purchase a 9 year old card on some flea market, but rather get a somewhat more recent model.Shinda Sekai Sensen

Kubuntu Maverick RC x64 w/ Kde 4.5.2 (main)
Kubuntu 10.04 x64 w/ Kde 4.5.1to be wiped, no point in keeping it any longer
