Microsoft webcam

I am trying to use a microsoft external webcam on my laptop that is running kubuntu. When I plug it in and click on the USB symbol it says " no devices plugged in"

How do I get this to work. My overall goal is to be able to use Skype.

External web cameras are not like USB sticks. You don't "mount" them. Install Skype from the repository. Plug in your camera. Run Skype and log in. Select the blue icon menu in the lower left corner of the contacts list. Select the "Options" menu. Click on the Video icon of the options menu. The right panel will show a drop down combo box which should list your external automatically. To the right of it is a black square with a grey "Test" button in it. IF the combo box shows a webcamera description then click the test button. The button will disappear and the black square will turn into a video image showing you watching your camera. IF the combo box doesn't show any web camera attached then close Skype. Install Cheese from the repository. Open cheese and see if it show you watching your camera. If it does then it installed some needed libraries. Close cheese and retry skype and test your camera again.
