Settings gone from menu!!! Ver. 7.04

I have version 7.04 Kubuntu becuase the new version will not install for some reson on my computer. But I was installing some things on the os (by the way I am very new). and when I went to the menu to look for settings it was not there anymore. So how can I get it back?!

    Thanks,

    Welcome to the forum!

7.04 isn't supported any more so you won't get updates so I would really recommend a more recent version if it can be achieved.

What are your machine specs please, what newer version have you tried to install and importantly what went wrong (eg did it just freeze or you got an error message etc)

ok, I just need something haha.

But I have a e machines with like 2 gigs ram and Pentium Celeron Processor, its a low end comp I got for free. But

what happens when I try to install the new version 10.04 kubuntu and ubuntu do the same thing. It gets to the selection screen you know do you want to try or install all the other options. So when I select the first option, or any other option for that matter. It goes to the splash screen then, when the splash screen is done it just flashes the black screen like its turning the screen on and off. So I am not sure what to do to get a new version but I would like to have ubunutu 10.04.

      Thanks for your help.

With 2 Gigs of Ram it can't be that low end!

I suspect that something in your system is not getting on with the 10.4 installer.

        Take a look here

        https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

If the machine is fairly old, it might not have proper ACPI compliance, in which case as noted there is an option to install with no ACPI (basically limited power management). You'll find an option for that by hitting F6.

Another issue can be graphics. You can hit F4 to get safe graphics mode which will help minimise problems from that side. That may enable you to get to the live desktop and thereafter to install.

Plan B would be to get hold of the alternate cd, which has a text-based installer. Some people can be a bit concerned about it especially the partitioner bit, if they are trying to keep a windows install. If you don't want to do that, and there's nothing on it that you particularly want to keep the alternate cd may well bypass some of the issues of the live one for you. That's not to say that the alternate cd wipes everything, it's just that you need to have a bit more knowledge about what you are doing, if you want to retain data.

        Hope this makes sense.

Yah I have already tried almost all the boot options, and for some reson my computer does not bring up 'safe graphics mode' . I have gone into text mode, and have taken off the splash screen, but it still does the same thing. I am running off a video card do not know what it is though, becuase the on board video does not work. Or is not set, I still have to look into that. But I have tried almost everything, if you have any more ideas please throw them at me. I am willing to try everything! I really want a new OS.

Thanks again for all your help!

Re: Settings gone from menu!!! Ver. 7.04

I've had a similar boot problem and so have many others. My solution was to install the base 10.04 system and then install another GUI after. I chose fluxbox but there are other good options. It's hard to tell if it's actually a problem with KDE and sometimes I think there is a bug in the kernel which changed a while back. Perhaps instead of using the default kernel 2.6.32-22 on 10.04, replace it with 2.6.34-xx.

I'm looking to change the menu on an 8.04 KDE installation right now, and what I've found is that you can right click on the menu border and chose "Edit menu". It looks like that is a front end to this file:
~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu which can probably be edited by hand to do the same thing. BTW, if it is any help to you, I see the System Settings command as
            Code:
            systemsettings -caption "%c" %i %m
Edit: I think your best bet on the menu problem, is to delete the above mentioned menu file. That should regenerate the original default. However, in case I'm wrong (it happens frequently), make a backup first.
            Code:
            cp applications-kmenuedit.menu applications-kmenuedit.menu.bak
            rm applications-kmenuedit.menu
