I must admit I originally used VMWare player but went for VB because I was unable to shrink the copy of XP I had converted and at that time I could not do a fresh install within VMware player.

Seems it has now caught up in that respect and at some point it will simply boil down to a question of performance, which is a good thing.

I gotta get the folder sharing option working properly. Any ideas?
Until then, is it safe to keep the files on a file upload site with password protection?

I've never bothered setting up shared folders myself, but here is the ubuntu community help on the subject.

That ain't working. I tried typing

net use x: \\vboxsvr\share

in the windows console and I just got an error message.

What do I have to tweak for USB support?

From this it would seem that you actually need the non-free version from the oracle website, and you then simply add yourself to the vboxusers group. I have never used the OSE version myself but TBH I thought I had read about someone who had been able to enable USB support in it.

When you plug in a usb device you are then able to "connect" it via the icon on the bottom bar of the virtualbox program window.

So far as the error message is concerned - what error message do you get- is it one of those shown on the ubuntu community page? Have you got the guest additions installed?

As I have said I've never bothered setting up shared folders given the very limited use I have for XP (basically it's to update my TomTom) so I can't claim to know the answer to your problem.

However, looking at my installation there appear to be 2 key aspects:

1. User permissions matching - that should be accomplished by you being a member of the vboxuser group. As you can use USB I take that as a given

2. The installation of guest additions

This may help but beyond that I think you probably need someone else to step in, sorry

Thanks a lot. That link really was useful. Turns out I just didn't know where to look for the shared folder ("My Networking Places" -> "Entire Network" -> "VirtualBox Shared Folders")
