Try Synaptic and see if it works any better.
If not, you might have broken packages. Try using the "Fix broken packages" option in Synaptic.

Tried installing synaptic (sudo apt-get install synaptic)
& got the following error message.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

Re: Cant update Kubuntu using KpackageKit

What version of kubuntu are you using?

You might try the following, from a console:

        Code:
        sudo dpkg --configure -a
        sudo apt-get install -f
You amy need to run both of these a couple of times to clear the error messages. You may also need to run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade after the error messages are cleared to complete the upgrade.

I have libvte9 on my system (lucid) and it seems to have installed correctly.

Re: Cant update Kubuntu using KpackageKit

OK, here is what *I* would do in this situation, but you may want to wait for a second opinion before doing it.

General plan: I would remove the offending packages so the upgrade will complete, and then reinstall them once the system is up and running.

First, do a sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to catch any relevant updates.

              Then:
              Code:
              sudo apt-get remove tex-common texlive-binaries winefish
Make a list (with pencil and paper) of what is going to be removed, and then go ahead and do it.
Go through the sudo apt-get install -f and sudo dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade until they all go through without errors. Boot up your system, go to whatever package manager you like (my choice is Synaptic) and reinstall the packages you removed.

It may well be that some packages will not reinstall -- if this is the case, don't panic, there are probably updates in progress, and they may appear after an update/dist-upgrade in a day or so.

That's what I would do about it. There may be other opinions.
