[SOLVED] Nvidia driver Geforce 9600 GT

I just bought a Asus Geforce 9600 GT Matrix on a store sale ( and I've never used a Geforce with Linux before) and made a fresh install of Lucid, updated and upgraded and went on to install the propriety drivers.

My problem is that no matter how I do I get a error saying that there's no power cable connected to the card(there is, with a new PSU), using those drivers. If I change to Driver "nv" I'm able get to the login screen, otherwise I'm at CLI login. Is it the card, driver or am I doing something wrong here?

Most posts here and on ubuntuforums are 1-2 years old, with no or little help (..to me atleast as I'm new to Linux+nvidia)

My hardware are ASUS M2N -MX SE, AMD 64 X2, 2 GB RAM (could it be the Motherboard in conflict with the graphics card?)

Huh!

I had a 9600GT -- it worked fine, as long as I had it. It is now working fine in my granddaughter's computer (Grandpa likes the newer ones ... )

I don't think I've ever seen a post with your error. It is so unusual and specific that I'm strongly inclined to believe it, at least in a literal way. I don't question that you installed it correctly and hooked up the PCI-x or whatever that special power cable is called. But for the card to report "no external power" must have been caused by a sensor that detected the problem. I think I'd be finding my packaging and heading back to the store -- perhaps with a hardcopy of the error message in hand ... I'd ask them to swap it for a different 9600GT, if they have one. I think maybe you got the 1 in 10 pieces of computer gear that shows up DOA. Sorry.


EDIT: I've never tried the "NoPowerConnectorCheck" screen option, and have not read a single post on the topic, so I dunno, but you're not likely to hurt anything by trying it.

What I thought aswell, though what keeps me hanging in there is this bug

...lucid alpha and a different card yet same issue (-with no solution) made me think it was more of a software issue.

card bought on a demo sale, so there's no warranty yet I'm quite sure they would take it back if I can "prove" it's broken in normal use/condition (i.e usually in windoze). Plus the fact that I rushed down the store and bought a new PSU Corsair 550W to solve it, i hoped (the plug is called PCIe 6 pin connector) the PSU I bought has 2x6 pins and neither power the card.

though I'm not sure how to try this "NoPowerConnectorCheck" .. seems like a option rather then a setting according to the bug (?)

Happy to hear some more from 9600 users with some input hopefully .. before I contact the retailer >

Really? Well, I'm surprised, but I guess there's an example of Linux telling you exactly what was needed to fix the error.

Have you tried 3d stuff (Desktop effects or compiz)? Does glxgears run? I'm still having a hard understanding why such a "wrong" error would happen, but I'm glad you got a working card there.

Desktop effects seem to work ok, glxgears show ̣~9500 frames in 5.0 seconds,
(isn't that quite low or?) Stellarium show about 47 fps, so 3D is working.

Need to set up Blender and see how it will perform .. and for the hell of it a 1st person shooter

On Kubuntu 10.04 with KDE 4.5 Beta, GLX/compositing is executed with Kwin. In this configuration, my GTX260 runs around 24000 frames per 5 sec. with glxgears. Your 9500 figure is not a disaster for a GT9600 - that will play videos in full screen mode (normal-sized computer monitors, not a big screen TV) and stuff like that. BTW, you can use the Coolbits option (see my screen stanza above) and overclock your GT9600 a bit, and get a little more out of it.

Interestingly, on my other OS, sidux running KDE 4.4.4 and the same Nvidia driver version (256.35), GLX/compositing is executed with compiz, and glxgears runs ~45000 frames in 5 sec. I was a bit shocked when I finally figured this out a couple weeks ago, although for most typical uses (browser/youtube/light graphics) it is not obvious that there is a difference.

So, my hypothesis, subject to installing and configuring compiz on Kubuntu 10.04 (which I don't have time to do at the moment), is that Kwin is lagging way behind compiz in running GLX/compositing. I don't have any reason to suspect that the Linux kernel for Kubuntu is significantly slower than the one for sidux, and with the hardware and the Nvidia driver the same, it must be the GLX/compositing package that is the source of the difference.

Just an FYI -- that's all I know about it at the moment.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. This implies, one would think, that my GTX260 can do at least as well in Kubuntu as it does in Sidux -- which is what I expected when I discovered the big difference. I think there are actually different versions of GLX in play, but I'm suddenly not satisfied with my Kubuntu performance. >

I think I'll do some experiments with turning desktop effects on and off, etc.

@thrylosg1, would you be so kind as to post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, and btw which Nvidia driver version is running there?

makes me slightly annoyed with my problems and frame rate (that is even lower atm with Kwin effects and some tasks running, something makes me think that fancy-task plasmoid is really stressing the system atm)... still quite alot better then my old Radeon 1950 I'm happy it's running atm, and don't have time to fiddle much with it as I have exam to write next week

Edit; I have another question, does the card I have being named matrix, make any difference with the 'general' 9600GT cards? Read somewhere, can't find it now that the Matrix doesn't in the spec for it say that it is PCI-E 2.0, not mentioning PCIe 1.x compatible (maybe far fetched, but my motherboard ain't the best out there, thus my thought of the conflict in post 1 )

It didn't take long to learn that turning off desktop effects makes a huge difference in my GLX performance with Kubuntu. Two runs of glxgears, one with DE and one without, revealed that it runs GLX about twice as fast with DE disabled. I saw 52000 frames in 5 seconds with DE disabled, and nothing above 31000 with DE enabled.

Which still leaves me wondering why, with compiz (not KDE desktop effects) on sidux, I get 47000 even with "the cube", Emerald, and the other eye candy enabled.

BTW I run a 1600x1200 display on a Samsung CRT, with a fairly beefy conky running, so don't take this as the outer limits of what a GTX260 could do in other environments.

@Jonas, I don't know about the Matrix brand. Mine is a EVGA card. But, I do know that for any given GPU, they can clock it and populate the memory in various ways, so your 9600GT may not be the same as thrylosg1's. It is also possible that your PCI spec is an older version and not able to push the GPU to its maximum capability.

I did a clean installation on 10.04 64bit and installed the nvidia driver from 'Hardware Drivers'.

The driver version shown in Nvidia X server settings is: 195.36.24

I found the exact card model btw. Its Gainward Bliss 9600GT 1024 GS
