    [SOLVED] How to get taskbar / System Tray at the bottom of the screen back?

    Hi again folks,

    Sometime between installing Kubuntu 10.04 and now, my taskbar / system tray at the bottom of the window screen disappeared.
    I've been tinkering around Kubuntu here and there trying to get it back. Unfortunately, its a no go.

    Ive been surviving by clicking the top right corner of the screen, and using "Add Widget" to add an application launcher.
    And using Alt-Tab to go through my applications. But alas, Im seriously missing my taskbar/system tray at the bottom of the screen.
    I thought I could live without it, but I want it badly back.

    Googling around the past week for trying to get it back resulted in no revelations for getting it reinstalled.

    Any tips?

    10.04 LTS Kubuntu
    No idea what version of KDE comes with 10.04 Kubuntu
    Think I have Grub 2
    No other operating systems installed except Kubuntu

    Desktop PC
    Athlon X3 440 64-Bit
    Nvidia 8500
    4 GB Ram
    2 of them, 160 Gig Hard Drives, No Raid because Kubuntu Fails to install when using RAID

    Right click anywhere in the bar on the bottom of the screen.
    Panel Options > Add Widgets.
    Click All Widgets and look for "system tray" and drag into bar.
    Do the same for "task manager".

    This should do it for you.

      Thanks for the info!

      I just figured out the "trick" to getting the "taskbar" at the bottom of the screen. Moments after your post. I felt good, I wanted to drink a beer after all this.

      So, unlike windows, wheres theres a dedicated "taskbar"

      In Kubuntu 10.04, The "Taskbar" is a "Panel" that contains "Widgets"

      In a window's sense, the "taskbar" is a "panel" with the following "widgets"

      Application Launcher Widget (K Button) In Windows, that be the Start Button
      Task Manager Widget
      System Tray Widget
      Digital Clock Widget

      So, after killing a lot of time figuring it out. "A Task Bar is A Panel With Widgets."

      Right Click the Desktop on 10.04, and click "Add Panel"

      The panel looks like a button that shows up on the corner of the screen.
      Mine is gray, im not sure how yours will look like.
      From here, you right click the "panel" and click into "Panel Settings"
      A long gray bar shows up which basically has arrows on it.
      You can click the arrows the adjust the panel size.

      Once you click and drag the arrows, the "panel button" grows in size.
      And turns into a "real long gray rectangle" This is the background of
      the "taskbar"

      Now once you have a panel stretched out as long as your monitor.
      You add widgets and drag them onto the panel.
      Once you add the following widgets:

      Application Launcher Widget
      Task Manager Widget
      System Tray Widget
      Digital Clock Widget

      Then you got a real honest to god, took me a few weeks, TASK BAR.
      It only took a few weeks of googling, asking the professionals
      here on the wonderful Kubuntuforums.net, and straining my mental health.


      I was searching for terms on google, like, "task bar" "taskbar" "system tray"
      "systemtray" That didnt help. Eventually, my google kung fu paid off
      when I searched for "notification area" which eventually led to "missing notification area" which then led to here.

      Oh my god, I am going to celebrate, grab some booze, eat a gallon of ice cream, and watch some Burn Notice then sleep.

        Useful, glad ya got if figured out my friend...Kubuntu is a bit hard to figure out in regards to adding stuff to the panel and such...took me some time as well.

          Another piece of info that might come in handy - Should you fudge up your plasma settings, you can get back to the default by (make sure hidden files are shown in your home folder) going to
          /home/.kde/share/config and delete the files "plasmarc" and "plasma-desktopappletsrc", then log out and back in.

            Thank you very much. I had the same problem of "vanishing task bar" when I was playing around with the settings on the desktop and now it is solved thanks to the information in this post!

              Just to box this off, to prevent recurrence right click on the desktop and select "lock widgets".
