[SOLVED] Anyway to input foreign letters like Chinese/Japanese Input?

    Hey Kubuntu guys,

U here again. You guys been pretty helpful since Ive switched to the Kubuntu bandwagon.
Kubuntu for the most part covers my needs.

Under Microsoft Windows, you could input another language characters, like japanese or chinese,
when you went into Settings > Control Panels > Keyboards and Languages. Then you
would install a language. It would install the "foreign" language.

When your typing a document, if you needed to add a foreign character, you would hit control+space to change the language from English to Japanese/Chinese. Then you could enter the letters there.

It was called Microsoft Pinyin Character Input (for the Chinese Mandarin Language).
Is there a way to do that under Kubuntu using the GUI (mouse clicks only)?

To an extent, I've been using the command line a little more, but its still noob-ish.
Like xterm, cd, ls, and exit. Pretty much all I know, lol.

    Thanks in advance,
    - U

Look at packages skim and skim-scim-pinyin

      Hi there and thanks,

      I installed Skim through KPackageKit.
It looks installed on my system since there are Xs next to the KPackageKit when I search for Skim.

And now, its in the Utilities Menu when I click the K Button (Kubuntu Application Menu)
I click it, but nothing happens. So, Ill go play around with this, until I figure out how it works.
Then, I'll come screaming up here on the forums when I cant get it to work in a week.

Re: Anyway to input foreign letters like Chinese/Japanese Pinyin/Hiragana Input?

i've been pretty dissatisfied with skim in the past. i'm using ibus right now.

it's pretty easy to set up, this is the point and click method. go to system settings > regional & language settings > install new language. remember to add the new language to the languages list when you are done. seems kind of redundant.

install ibus from the package manager

finally, you have to make ibus start when you turn on you computer. go to system settings > advanced tab > autostart > add program. the command for the ibus daemon is ibus-daemon -d the other details don't really matter. i'd give it an obvious name like "ibus"

restart for changes to take effect! you should be able to switch languages with ctrl + space

you might need to right click the ibus icon in the tray and go to properties to add the input method you installed earlier

Re: Anyway to input foreign letters like Chinese/Japanese Pinyin/Hiragana Input?

          That last post worked wonders.

iBus works like a charm per your instructions. iBus seems to be pre-installed already on 10.04.
          I clicked the K Button -> Settings -> System Settings -> Regional & Language
          Clicked The "Install New Language"

Then I went to go search for KPackageKit to install IBus, but on the way, in
if you click the K Button Launch Button -> Settings -> iBus Perferences

So, I didn't have to go through your step to install iBus through KPackageKit.
I just clicked it, and it asked me to turn it on. I clicked yes. Then I was able to
switch between languages using ctrl+space using the text editor, like kate (aka notepad for windows)

Thanks again for the tip! If theres any service I could provide, I would lol.

p.s. I just found out that ctrl+space in the reply field, to type in foreign letters into the browser doesnt work, lol.

            マジけ? 俺は書けるよ!

glad i helped a little i didn't have any problems myself, so i'm not really sure what could be going wrong.

does ibus work in other applications (openoffice, arora etc.)?

try installing ibus gtk, if it's not already on your system. kde applications use ibus qt4, which i'm assuming is what you have installed now. installing ibus gtk might help with applications like firefox and skype

remember when you're tinkering, language settings only take place after you've logged out once

Re: Anyway to input foreign letters like Chinese/Japanese Pinyin/Hiragana Input?

              ありがと !

              谢谢 !

I did what you asked and installed ibus-gtk (New input method framework using dbus) from KPackageKit.
Now, input works in the FireFox Browser AND Google Chrome.

But at least it works in the browser, and kate.
I tried OpenOffice Word Processor, and it doesnt work there.
Oh, and it also works on the konsole, at least japanese does. Chinese not so much.
In the Kopete Instant Messenger it works as well.

At least, I can post in a different language now, and write in a basic text editor.
Shame it doesnt work in openoffice though.

This is a big leap forward in terms of writing stuff in a different language.

              Big Hugs and Kisses,

Re: Anyway to input foreign letters like Chinese/Japanese Pinyin/Hiragana Input?

In your favorite package manager, (mine is Synaptic), search for "openoffice.org-l10n". You will find at least two Chinese language packages and one Japanese for Oo.o.

Re: Anyway to input foreign letters like Chinese/Japanese Pinyin/Hiragana Input?

KPackageKit shows that I have simplified chinese/traditional chinese/japanese installed:

office productivity suit -- Chinese_traditional language package X
                    openoffice.org-l10n-zh-tw

office productivity suit -- Chinese_simplified language package X
                    openoffice.org-l10n-zh-cn

office productivity suit -- Japanese language package X
                    openoffice.org-l10n-ja

And ctrl+space doesnt work with OpenOffice 3.2 Word (yet).
For the most part, it works with kate, so Ill be typing in there. So its 80% working.
I can mark this as solved, I think. Right?

What I've learned with so far with Kubuntu versus Windows so far is that, it gets you from A to B.
Extra features like air conditioning, seat belts, leather seating might be included but no guarantees. lol.
