Just installed kubuntu

Cant seem to find how to open a shell, I really feel stupid because I have been running ubuntu for some time.

Can I assume you've just discovered alt+F2 (The run dialog) or were you looking through the kmenu?

threw the kmenu forgot everything starts with k there

If you know the name of the app, hitting alt+F2 shows a fast way to load it as well.

As usual in Linux, there are a multitude of ways of solving any problem. You can also install a package called "yakuake" which starts a handy-dandy drop down console whenever you hit the F12 key. Just hit F12 again to roll it up again.
