Virtual Win 98?

    Virtual Win 98?

    I see Virtualbox has been deprecated. I figured that it would be my solution. So now, I guess I'll pick brains. I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 and have a 8 gig HD in a USB enclosure that has Windows 98 on it. The only reason that it's still around is that SolidWorks is on it. The old windows box finally died, but I would like to fire up a win98 session on the Kubuntu machine. I tried booting to windows but this machine doesn't have a ps2 mouse port and windoze won't see a usb mouse.

    Ideas?

        OK so I see now that the name has been changed to protect the innocent (virtualbox-ose)
        I have looked at that, but is doesn't seem to have an option for a USB drive. What do you think of linking the USB drive to a folder on /home/<user> should work, huh?

          IF you need the USB option in VIrtualBox you'll have to use the version from the Oracle website.

            First I would convert your win98 to a vmware guest image:

            and:
            http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/

            Then I would grab vmware player bundle from here:
            http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

            Installation is easy.
            In dolphin go to the directory where you downlaoded player->open terminal in dolphin (view->sidepanel->terminal) and do:
            Code:
            sudo sh VMware-Player-3.1.0-254807.i386.bundle
            you may have to change:
            3.1.0-254807.i386.bundle
            to accommodate the version of the player you downloaded.

            The just follow the wizard.

            Once installed you will find vm player in Kicker (K-starter) ->systems.
            open it and "add new machine". Here you configure various aspects of your win98 to your liking.
            Note: I would accept the default RAM allocation.

              Here you can still buy USB to PS2 reduction for a mouse
              Kubuntu 16.04 on two computers and Kubuntu 17.04 on DELL Latitude 13

                Thanks! I'll give that a shot at some point this weekend. I'm going to be busy as hell the next 2 days.

                The mouse problem is just the tip of the iceberg of what will go wrong trying win98 on this box.
