I can't get any sound to work on Kubunt 10.04

Just installed Kubuntu 10.04 on this computer and I can't get sound to work. I suspect it's a driver issue.

In terminal, lspci returns the following:

Try if some sounds are not muted. Type alsamixer from the shell or choose a speaker icon in the panel and check out all related sliders.

miKeyBabid@ I am not a native speaker, but I think that a terminal, a shell, Command-line interface and CLI means the same.

You speak well enough - better than many!

I understood what you meant. I'm sure Prescience did/would have understood as well.

I think @miKeyBabid was refering to the typo of alfamixer.......and corecting it to ....alsamixer

Everything has the volume set to max except for s/pdif and s/pdif D which have no volume and/or are muted. I don't know if that's the problem, but I can't seem to be able to change them through kmix. I even used settings>configure kmix... to make all of the volume controls visible.

Take a look at K>"System Settings">Multimedia>"Device Preference" and fool around with the positions of the various choices. Note that I'm assuming that you have more than one choice. Many systems have both a built in sound device on the mother board and a sound card.

Sorry I skipped the first recomended step. Open a terminal and type:
                    Code:
                    aplay -l
to see, if you have ALSA driver in order. If it fails, you have a bigger problem than muting.

None of the choices in system settings work. The sound card is built into the motherboard. There is no second, separate sound card.

I'll check out the link you sent me and see if it can help me get this working

Re: I can't get any sound to work on Kubunt 10.04

It seems the sound card may not currently supported by ALSA. Their site is unclear.

                        "lspci -v" returns:

09:00.0 PCI bridge: Creative Labs [SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] CA0110-IBG PCI to PCIe Bridge

Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 19

On ALSA's list of supported sound cards, most relevant card on their list says the following:

                        X-Fi Xtreme Audio (PCIe) CA0110 [PCIe] snd-hda-intel; [ ] supported [ ] not supported

                          Code:
                          X-Fi Xtreme Audio (PCIe) CA0110 [PCIe] snd-hda-intel; [ ] supported [ ] not supported
I don't understand what it means, I think that neither choise is checked.

I thought, accordingly to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 that when you listed alsa driver properly, with no error, alsamixer should help. If aplay -l fails, you should get
                          Code:
                          aplay: device_list:221: no soundcard found...
I was in the same situation after upgrade to Lucid and alsamixer helped me.

Installing alsamixergui had no effect. Other than that there is no "alsamixer" package besides GNOME's version of alsamixergui

I am surprised. There is no need to install anything. You want to say, that when you type alsamixer, the response is something like no program found?
