    Welcome!

So far as hardware detection is concerned, there should not be any real difference between ubuntu and kubuntu. Google both and see which looks most appealing to you.

Download the live cd version and burn an ISO image to CD or you can put it on a flash drive

    http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Then boot your machine with the media in and take it for a test drive without installing it using the "try" option. You can then satisfy yourself that your hardware works before taking the plunge.

With kubuntu you also have the benefit of this forum in particular, which is a major plus - it's got me out of a hole on more than 1 occasion

Re: Gimp + Genius Tablet + which OS ?

I've never done an install within windows, but from what I have read on this forum, it isn't the best way to do it.

I've not used windows seriously for some time now so would not know how to approach this other than to say have you looked at the log that is referred to?

My preference would in all seriousness be to do it the unetbootin way. I assume the disk you have got is the "desktop" addition. If so, if you merely have it in your CD drive and reboot you will be given the "try" option.

                  Edit:

                  https://bugs.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/552357

Looks like it's a bug in wubi - as a result, it will only affect installs within windows. Given the timings, I would suspect it has been fixed in 10.04.
