Kubuntu starting to command line after update

    Hi there,

Here i go again, with another problem, this time i made the update to 10.4, i was using the version 9.10 and when appeared the message to do the update, i accepted.
The upgrade went ok, until the restart, then my computer restarted, and it was on the splash screen for more than 20 min, i choose to do an hard restart, and when kubuntu started, it was to the command line asking for my login.

This is the third time that this happens to me
on other times, i did the update from kpackage. but now i thought that would be an different upgrade...

I have an graphical card -> ATI HD 5670, that had problems with install drivers from kubuntu repository.

how can i start x from command line?
or maybe get the drivers from my card.

    Thanks for the help

"startx" is the command once you login....

Really not laughing at anyone more than myself, but I remember calling someone (Happy Mothers' Day, Mom!) to answer my question, "How do I do a 'dir' from the screen?" (MS-DOS 3.3 days)

If kdm was working before you installed, maybe it's just had it's corners rounded off? Maybe a reinstall of kdm?

As far as your card is concerned, is 'xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd' installed by any chance? I don't have an HD card but poking around here and there this seems to be a somewhat common theme.

HI all, and thanks for answering my question.

The first time that i had this problem was when i just had finished to install kubuntu and installed the drivers by the app on kubuntu to install drivers.

The second time was when i did de update all packages, when appeared a pop-up notifying to do the update.

The third time occurred when appeared the pop-up to do the upgrade to kubuntu 10.04, i though that would do the update to the core of SO, not to everything.

I had to format and install again, but i dont have sure about the problem, my first idea is the grafical card driver.

If you get thrown into a console screen again, when you boot up, the easiest way to get the desktop is to log into your own account from the console prompt. Then issue

          sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start

You should be presented with a graphical login screen as you normally should have been. If it says that the xserver has already been started then use "restart" instead of "start".
