two weeks and going with ubuntu...would Kubuntu work better?

I've been on the Gnome desktop for two weeks, and I'm still puzzled. I don't know if its Ubuntu or Gnome thats messing me up, but I'm still not able to use SUDO, or get my passwords or anything to work. I want to install abiword but I don't have the internet or a CD burner, so I can't resolve dependencies.

I want a nice desktop, a nice word processing application (not a SUITE) and some games to play. This is my home computer, where I sit not to surf the net or do alot of HTML or internet stuff, its my 'think' computer, where my novel writing will happen, and when I need a break, a few rounds of mahjong.

It upsets me that I can't install a single application without the internet that isn't a part of Ubuntu already, and that OpenOffice LAGS hugely whenever I just want to write a document. I don't need spreadsheets and datatables and huge stuff. I need a word program with font and formatting, and a spellchecker. Ubuntu hasn't provided that yet. I've been tempted by other distros.

Maybe Kubuntu would be better for me? How does it different from ubuntu in terms of bulk, excess programs, and what all comes on the CD that isn't on ubuntu? o.o Would I still be able to play mahjong? ^__^

Well, If you don't have a net connection or no medium to get programs from internet, you would better get a debian DVD, you would be happy with that.

ahh... How you supposed to install linux on a system that don't have CD-rom ? or internet ? :roll:

BTW, apt can be setup to run from HDD.

I HAVE a cd-rom I DON'T have a DVD rom. I already HAVE ubuntu installed, from CD. ^^ Sorry if you're confused.

debian also comes in CD's (I think 7 or 8 ). I suggest you using debian coz debian comes with almost everything you would ever need. that was only my opinion not the only solution for your problem. you can wait to other members to suggest you other possible things.

I have a similar question to urbandryad. I've tried Linspire, Xandros and SUSE 10 and then stumbled upon Ubuntu. I love it Ubuntu! However, I'm not attached to either GNOME or KDE, in fact my next favourite distro was Xandros, which was KDE-based.

I'm toying with the idea of switching to Kubuntu. It seems to me to be more popular as a desktop with a wider range of distros and I believe it also has a better range of programs developed for it. For example, I believe amaroK and Quanta are both KDE programs. They work in GNOME, but perhaps better in KDE.

I know that many of you here must prefer KDE. Can you please share your reasons for going with the KDE version? Also, is the development of Kubuntu as good as with Ubuntu?

Well after those distros you've tried no wonder you think Ubuntu is heaven sent...you've been waiting for a debian based system (maybe Xandros is, I don't know)

So...I don't know if those apps work *better* in KDE. I think they work about the same. If you have a fast processor and like "eye candy" then I would recommend KDE over GNOME. I think they are both equally user friendly but I don't think there is an enormous difference between the two. I like KDE, I am use to KDE, and I am more comfortable with it. Also I find I can tinker around with more things in KDE than I can with GNOME. But you're asking a Kubuntu Forum, obviously everyone will be pro KDE

But honestly, I think KDE is probably the more popular Environment but I don't GNOME is obsolete or incompatible by any means.

Thank you cddesjar. I think I try the Kubuntu live CD first and see whether I prefer it over Ubuntu/GNOME. I'd like to make a decision before I do a clean install of the final version tomorrow of Ubuntu. Maybe it'll be a clean install of Kubuntu instead!

Anyone else care to share their reasons for preferring KDE?

I prefer KDE because it has better program unionship (something like that) and it has better eye-candy in my opinion. SuperKaramba & Plasma

I find it difficult to understand how a person could prefer GNOME to KDE, but hell, I prefer chocolate and my wife likes vanilla...

Why don't you install them both?  The apps themselves will work in either environment, and you can take all the time in the world to decide which one you prefer.  Disk space is cheap these days...

I installed ubuntu first, and had various problems - did not set up network correctly, and it was difficult to set up my network printer (HP Laserjet 4300).

I tend to prefer KDE, so I killed off ubuntu, and installed kubuntu instead. Everything works the same, except I did not have any problems with the network or the printer.
