Need To Update

Running 9.10 solo. Have ran several previous versions of Kubuntu and other Linux distros.
It seems when I update, regardless of the version or distro, something gets broken or
doesn't work anymore (audio in particular).
Is there any compelling need to update anything if my system is working as I desire.

No, there is no need to update (if you are are happy with your system) - the only exception is the security updates.

The end of life for 9.10 is April 2011, if you don't need a specific version of a program or any new features added in latest release you can use it safely till then.

On the other hand 10.04 will be long time release, you'd be able to use it till April 2013, so it might be a good investment of time to switch to it sometime.

:P KDE 4.4, better drivers and it's the LTS, tomorrow is the big day .
