[explained] KpackageKit informs of updates but no longer updating

Hey,

Over the last couple of weeks KpackageKit has been informing me about bug updates via the device notifier, but when I click to update it seems to lose any bug fixe / update information. I'm left with just a blank Kpackagekit .10window.

ctrl+alt+f2 informs me that I have mail (although I have no idea what that means or how to access it), but no mention of any updates.

Has anyone else had this kind of behaviour? Any thoughts?

I only use Kpackagekit for updates / bugfixes. Otherwise I use synaptic / the commandline for installing software etc.

I'm currently using Karmic 9.10.

The KPackageKit is a developing application. Many users are using the Synaptic package manager as a robust package manager. The KPackageKit and Synaptic are frontends to the apt. More of the package managers > FAQ: Package Managers.

I only use Kpackagekit for updates / bugfixes. Otherwise I use synaptic / the commandline for installing software etc.

I'm using the commanline and the Synaptic when i need the gui.

Upgrading:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Your Kubuntu is (probably) sending mail to you.

Konsole:

mail

man mail

NAME
mail, mailx, Mail — send and receive mail

Some applications could send mail ot the administrator (to you).

The cron is one example:"apt-cache show cron"

Output from the commands is usually mailed to the system administrator
(or to the user in question); you should probably install a mail system
as well so that you can receive these messages.

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

don't find any updates / bugfixes to install. So I guess it's just KpackageKit that's giving me phony update notifications. I'm assuming the above codes also notify me about any bug fixes as well.

sudo apt_get anything won't work of course. That isn't what you typed, is it?
